Drago

Drago is the capital of the Kingdom of Erdantia and a major port town on the boundary between the northern coast of the Peninsula of Erdantia and the eastern coast of Erdantia north of the peninsula. It is situated at the edge of the Reber Plain.

Demographics

The inhabitants of Drago are almost exclusively human. The most prominent culture is Erdantines, with a small minority of Kelbrike and a larger minority of Cordaintines.

Government

The town is run by the Drago Minister, although the King of Erdantia can override any decision made by them. Although this is also true for any council-run settlement in Erdantia, this occurs more often as the King lives in Drago and as such takes a more active interest in its affairs.

Defences

The city is surrounded by a large wall, with two gates, one facing north-west with a road leading through the Reber Plain, into Timra, and up to Emmerion, and one facing south. A moat surrounds the city, connected to the canal but separated from the sea by a dike. The south-facing gate is actually two gates, one with a road passing through it and the other a large canal. The port is guarded over by a smaller sea wall, with watchtowers every fifty meters. Some of the watchtowers double as lighthouses.   Towards the northern side of the city is Drago Castle, the place of residence of King Ulric Tyler. The castle is separate from the city walls, and has it's own external wall.

Industry & Trade

Drago sustains itself from a variety of trade routes. Its southern gate connects to a well-developed canal crossing the Peninsula of Erdantia, making it on of the most direct routes between sides of the Peninsula, while its northwestern gate connects to a road moving upwards to @Emmerion, which in turn has trade links to the Atloan Ocean. It acts as an important link between the Peninsula of Erdantia and Mainland Erdantia, as well as maintaining trade between Erdantia and an Emmeri dependency on the eastern coast of Yannurrin, which then is able to move commodities by river to the rest of Emmerion. Drago is also a key part in trade routes to the Northern Colonies, usually via the Emmeri dependency, bringing Kakellium to Erdantia.

Infrastructure

The cove that Drago is situated in is lined with ports and shipyards. The entire city has a well-developed sewage system, and several canals cross its width. A large canal extends down from Drago across the Peninsula of Erdantia, connecting with the port city of Yarleth at the south. This both gives Drago trade access to Eseris and the southern side of the Peninsula, but also allows Drago to act as a defence point preventing the canal from being attacked from the north and controlling who comes into it, including taxing those that require transit. A large office and connected double watergate sit at the edge of the canal, controlling which ships enter and leave. Two cannons across the western side of the canal serve to discourage ships from attempting to get through uninvited while the gate is open.

History

The town began as a trading city founded by the Cordaint Empire, gaining income from its control of the Erdantian Canal in much the same way it does today, but became capital in 1441, taking over from the City of Renn. At this time, a large area of the city was flattened and became a private area for the King and various parts of the government. This included the royal palace, the military offices, and the treasury. Construction on this area began in 1442 and finished in 1451.

Geography

The town sits in a large cove next to the eastern ocean, in the Reber Plain, an area of northern Erdantia filled with infertile grasslands.

Natural Resources

The areas around Drago are filled with fish, and although Drago is a trading city first and foremost, the city provides about a fair proportion of its own food with fish from the area.
