Message In a Bottle
Effect
Of all the elemental spirits of storm and sea the winds are a stormborn's frequent friend.
This spell allows a Stormborn to whisper and receive messages. When cast, a wisp of fog and mist materializes around the stormborn then forms a floating translucent scroll. As the caster whispers, the words are inscribed on the fog-scroll. Once done, the caster points in the recipient's direction and whispers the oath of sending to the Storm Spirits. At that point, the scroll rolls up and seals itself in a bottle-shaped cloud, which then launches itself off at the speed of arcane thought.
The message flows along the currents of magic, powered by the stormborn's will. It can circumvent barriers if there is any open path, no matter how small, between the stormborn and the recipient so long as the recipient is within range of the spell. The only thing that can block the spell is magical silence, three foot of solid wood, dirt or stone.
Once the spell arrives, only the recipient notices as the bottle-shaped cloud appears, opens and the fog-scroll unfolds. The recipient then hears the caster's message while it's displayed in ghostly letters on the scroll. After the message has played, the recipient can reply, whispering a message back to the caster. As before, the message is magically written on the ghostly fog scroll. Once the reply is finished, the scroll closes, then races off to the caster in its bottle-cloud. This can take time and can distract the recipient who isn't expecting it!
Game Mechanics
Message in a Bottle allows a stormborn to send and receive whispered messages to a single recipient. Anyone nearby can hear these messages if they make a DC 25 Perception check. However! Only the caster and recipient can actually see and read the scroll.
If the recipient is a wizard or another sorcerer, they don't have to actually speak a reply but can literally write a short message on the scroll as a reply. However, this can only be a short reply. No maps, paintings or similar things can be sent.
As stated, the spell is blocked by silence spells, 3 foot of unbroken wood, stone, or dirt. However, it can navigate around any barrier provided the barrier has an opening of any shape or size. Even a mousehole or a crack.
Limitations are that the recipient must be within the spell's range and that it only transmits words spoken in a whisper. Or in the case of a wizard or sorcerer that silently scribes a reply, words that would be spoken in a whisper. The spell doesn't translate between languages.
Manifestation
A fog-like, translucent scroll and a bottle-shaped cloud.
Gestures & Ritual
Requirements for this are for the stormborn to whisper the message, point in the rough direction of the recipient, and say the Rites of Sealing.
Fickle Heart of Tempest, Storm, and Rain, send this message on its way.
