The town of Quilton’s Rise is small by most standards, lacking the domineering presence or exuberant flair of many towns. Instead it possesses a quaint and idyllic air much in fitting with the serene surroundings. Set upon a focal rise amidst undulating farm land it, if nothing else, can be said to have a commanding view of the landscape. At its center lies the large paved square facing the front of a town hall built around the battered shell of a keep of weathered sandstone.
The town is surrounded in all directions by fields and open farmland, with the exception of a large expanse of woodland to the northeast, and of course the lake.
Industry & Trade
Most inhabitants are ranchers and farmers.
Infrastructure
Lord Jarlon Quilton the Second maintains the streets within the town much better than he does the nearby stretches of the Yayvon Road -- or, rather, he supplements the income of those townspeople at the poorest income levels, by hiring them to maintain the town streets and the exteriors of town buildings. Lord Jarlon does participate in seasonal flood management, filling sandbags and digging ditches, and it is possible that he does other physical labor to take care of his fiefdom.
Up on Waxing Gibbous Road, Quilton's Rise has a permanent structure built to house Cuali caravans. It includes a paddock, stables designed to house caravan animals be they donkeys, horses, oxen, or other, and three sets of condominiums owned by Shire Merchant Company and managed by Cassia Smith.
The Horse and Plough Inn is a strictly-managed, no nonsense inn for hygienic, proper guests. It is run by Ms. Joanne Hulstone. Luncheon is served promptly at five minutes after noon by the sundial, and woe betide any who attempt to seat themselves after the noon call to grace. Supper is served promptly at six of the evening, but a second supper is permitted at nine of the evening for those who were unable to attend the official supper. The lanterns are dimmed and the fire is banked at eleven of the night, when all patrons had best either be in their beds or out the door.
The Rat and Spoon Inn is dilapidated, highly suspect, and quite a lot of risky fun for the sort of patron who needs to stay away from the Horse and Plough. It is owned and operated by Three Fingered Steve. It is exempt from all community maintenance efforts directed by Lord Jarlon, who is mystified that the Rat and Spoon has yet to collapse or burn itself down.
The Forge Temple is manned by Father Lambert and three lower-ranking priests, plus (until recently) a semi-retired Paladin of Augustin the Forgemaker. It provides holy services to members of the faith. The devout may petition for a berth within the temple if they need an overnight shelter.
