Cistffug and Coeddy (Chest-vah-gh and Kay-th-ee)
Cistffug and Coeddy is an urban legend that mainly prevails in Upper Preschwall, though it was been circulated in other Phesun towns as well. While the originaly source of Cistfugg and Coeddy is hard to pin down, it is likely that there is some kernel of truth to the overall legend, given the presence of magic in Elotia and the sometimes monstrous occurences that result.
Cistffug and Coeddy is a story often told to young adults (or about young adults) in an effort to encourage them to drink responsibly. However, the story sometimes has the opposite effect and encourages young people to act foolishly to test the veracity of the urban legend.
Summary
Cistffug and Coeddy is often told as a story about two friends who went out together to a tavern on a late, three Respite night. After a long night of drinking, carrying on, and becoming a nuisance to the other patrons at the tavern, the bartender kicks them out into the Respite-lit streets of Upper Preschwall. Once they are on the streets, they decide to find another tavern that will serve them. In their state, they hobble down the roads of the city before coming to a tavern somewhat in the middle of the road that they don't recall ever noticing before with a sign that says "Cistffug". One of the two friends has enough sense to know that this must be an ill omen, but the other friend says it must be a blessing and pulls on the door handle. The door (and sometimes the whole building) morph into a creature and swallow the friend whole before disappearing into a thick fog. When the fog rolls past, nothing remains and the other friend, scared whitless, begins to run in the opposite direction. In their attempts to get back home, they leave the main road and end up on a small road which unexpectedly takes them to an orchard behind someone's house. The friend, scared and drunk, sees a ripe fruit on one of the trees and decides to grab it, hoping to sober themselves up a little with food. When they pull the fruit free, a root grabs their feet at the same time and the fruit turns into an eye. The tree they picked the fruit from then reaches down and grabs the fruit back before entining more branches around the person, making them one with the tree before many more fruit blossom on the tree.
While not necessarily included in every telling, some common aspects (to build out the "flavour" of the tale) are:
- The two friends come from different social circles, one poor and one rich
- The tavern they go is one they are unfamiliar with, because they have kicked out of all of their normal haunts
- Their wives/sisters/mothers/family beg them not to go out drinking that night
- They both think about turning back at more than one point but decide not to
- They have an opportunity to travel home safely but spurn it
