Ranefen (Rain-phen)

The Ranefen is the primary meeting place of the Reid and the Halden, located at the centre of Haadstiger. The building is designed to look like it is in a constant state of disrepair and on the verge of collapse, but it is actually very structurally sound and can withstand extended physical and magical assault.

Purpose / Function

The Ranefen was originally constructed as a final work project by Hyta, one of the earliest Halden in Konard. She constructed the building as a symbol of both her skill and the skill held in the minds of Konard architects, under the guise of completing a contract to build a "celebratory meeting place for the Reid of Konard".

Alterations

Hyta followed this contract as prescribed, but the art that she created was nearly immediately deemed to great a place for only the Reid to occupy and plans were drafted within the coming eochs to expand the building to include space for the Halden, the Gewanbanke (the judicial courts in Konard), and meetings spaces for people living in Haadstiger.
These additional constructions were each led by the other Halden on the council (Hyta having been accepted into their ranks by that time). Each Halden created their own variation on the theme of "neary destroyed yet incredibly sound", and so the overall aesthetic of the building is somewhat chaotic and very jarring for anyone unfamiliar with its story.

Architecture

The chaotic architecture of the building is fundamental to its display and its function. Though there are some esoteric aspects of the building interior, such as artificially broken walls or other components, the vast majority serve a structural function. Much of the strength of the building is routed in the fact that magical reinforcements have been laced into parts of the building wholly unconnected to what is being reinforced. For example, a large portion of the eastern atrium is supported by a pillar in the north atrium, a long arching beam that spans into the western meeting hall, and a ward set into the foundation stone of the southern court wall.
Because of the methods used in the construction of the Ranefen, both the inside and outside are a complex swirl of textures, colours, materials, and surfaces.

Defenses

The primary defenses of the Ranefen are based in its overall structural integrity. The complicated construction, warding, and overall design mean that anyone wishing to attack the Ranefen will first assume that the building is very weak and easily destroyed. However, upon discovering the strength of the building, they will then find it difficult to identify weak points and find avenues for penetration. Finally, the Ranefen is constructed such that any eventual failures cause focused energy blasts outward in the direction of the final destructive force, meaning that even small damages done to the Ranefen can be very dangerous to even Konard citizens.
