Sláine, Goddess of Health and Prosperity (Slawn-yah)

What is believed about Sláine?

It is believed that she comforts the dying in their final moments. Although she is a comforting presence, Sláine is known to like order and is known as a perfectionist. She is said to watch over and support all healers while they provide their services: guiding their hands. She also provides help to alchemists or the like who create healing potions. It is believed she provides comfort to those who are ailing, but provides aid to anyone who is trying to heal or help those who are ailing. She is also said to be present during childbirth, and helps the child breath it’s first breath.

How is Sláine portrayed?

Sláine is portrayed as a middle-aged woman, with short brown hair and kind eyes. She is often seen wearing long white dresses, and being surrounded by doves in paintings and statues. Necklaces of doves are often given to newborn babies, and many people will hold onto their necklaces for their whole lives.

Where is Sláine portrayed?

Like every god, artwork of her can be seen within temples dedicated to her, as well as temples dedicated to The Nine. There are also a number of statues of her in public locations. Additionally to this, Sláine's image can be found in hospitals, medical centres and midwiferies.

How do people pray to Sláine?

When engaging in prayer to Sláine it is the common practice to do so while down on one’s knees, and to draw a small circle with two finger tips in the air before and during the prayer. If one is praying for healing it is also commonplace for them to draw this circle over the ailing area.

Why do people pray to Sláine?

It is most common (but not limited) to pray to Sláine for: the healing of an injury or illness, the return to or maintenance of good health, the longevity of loved ones, for fertility, and for the future health of newborns.
