Sol, Goddess of the sun

What do people believe about Sol?

Sol is known to be the friendliest of the gods: while Njord experiences big swings in mood, Sol is considered to be consistently friendly. It is believed that Sol enjoys just watching the world unfold. Despite her reputation for kindness, few people report ever having direct intervention from her.

How is Sol portrayed?

She is portrayed as a woman with dark curly hair, and wearing light dresses with bright summer colours. It is common she is portrayed with an iguana on her shoulders. The sun features prominently in almost all depictions of her.

Where is Sol portrayed?

Like every god, artwork of her can be seen within temples dedicated to her as well as temples dedicated to The Nine. Small iguana carvings are a common feature of fireplaces.

How do people pray to Sol?

Praying to Sol is done in one of two ways. People enjoy praying to Sol under the sun, and will take their prayer outside, often completing small dancing rituals in place of spoken prayer. There is no standardised method of dance, and people are free to express their bodies in any way they see fit. Due to the nature of this method, it is often reserved for clerics at temples, wealthier people with access to private gardens, or large festivals. If people wish to pray in private, or don’t have access to large spaces to express themselves, it is often done by lighting a single candle, and saying the prayer while sat in a position lower than the candle (e.g. placing the candle on the table, while sitting on the floor to pray).

Why do people pray to Sol?

For good weather (such as sunny days), guidance during the day, to keep warm, and successful harvests.
