Sulia

Sulia, which lies just near the mouth of the Elishar River along the coast of the Arjulean Sea, is one of the major trade hubs of Eltcarem. With the labyrinth of the Mædenjolt Mountains in central Ankezidar and the swamp Ik-Batir to the north, the main road from Ankezidar to Ferothi goes south through Sulia. With its position at the mouth of the river, Sulia also gets trade along the river and across the Arjulean Sea with Scaal Belas and Zegroden through its port town Ortium.

Demographics

Sulia is a mostly human city, though it is fairly diverse because of its location on major trade routes. About 18,000 of the 25,000 residents are humans. About 4,000 are elves and half-elves, mostly high elves but with some wood elves. Roughly 2.000 dwarves live in the city, most of them being hill dwarves, but with a few mountain dwarves. Around 500 gnomes live in Sulia, and the remaining 500 people are a mixture of half-orcs and other half-humans (tieflings, aasimar, genasi, etc.), halflings, and a small number of lizardfolk. On top of the roughly 25,000 permanent residents, there are a large number of merchants who come in and out of the city. It would be impossible to count them because they do not stay long enough to be counted in a census, but these travelling merchants come from almost any race.

Industry & Trade

Though most any city job can be found in Sulia, most of its wealth come from trade. It is positioned perfectly to be a major hub of trade between Ferothi and Ankezidar, and with its access to the Arjulean sea it does more trade with Scaal Belas and Zegroden than any other city. Inn keepers make a lot of money from the many travelling merchants who come to the city, and most inns are always bustling with people from all over the continent. Oddly enough, Sulia does not export much itself, but it makes quite a bit of coin in transporting the imports and exports of other settlements, as well as looking after the merchants while they stay in town.

Guilds and Factions

The Merchants Guild of Sulia is arguably more powerful than the actual government. The Merchants Guild sets the guidelines on who can and cannot buy and sell within the city. Their most important role is making order out of the chaos by determining where in the city center vendors can set up shop, and the guild has enough money to hire any muscle required to deal with those who would defy them. If you are a merchant and want to make any money in Sulia, you had better be friendly to the Merchants Guild, or better yet, join them, as members can get better prices for their goods and better deals from other guild members.

History

After the dragons were defeated, people were able to organize in large groups, which the dragons tried to prevent. This meant that many new settlements were formed, and larger settlements, too. Sulia was one of these settlements. For much of its early history, Sulia was actually smaller than its neighbor Ortium, but once great roads were built to connect all of Eltcarem, Sulia found many major roads passing through its walls. Sulia started out as a minor trade hub (the trade routes were the precursors to the modern roads), but grew over time and eventually became quite powerful and important because of its location.

Geography

Sulia sits near the mouth of the Elishar River and only a few miles from the Arjulean Sea. It mostly plains and farmland around the city until you get to the coast, where there are fishing villages and the port town Ortium, which handles of Sulia's overseas commerce.
