The Expanse

We couldn't get but a day into that blasted desert before we had to turn back. If dodging the sand devils weren't bad enough, we had to deal with several sink holes, one of those massive pillars of stone collapsed killing a quarter of our expedition, and later as a sink hole appeared in front of us another rocky slab of rock was pulled into the sky below our feet. We had to scrable for our lives or the entire team surely would have been lost.

The Expanse is a massive desert to the east of Elturia on the other side of the moutains from the Alboldir Valley. Few people have ventured into the region due to the scarcity of resources and the tumultuous sands that blanket the area. Not to mention frightening myths about the region circle throughout the people of the valley. Several decades ago members of The Cartographers attempted to travel into the region only to be quickly repelled. However, they stilled learned some valuable information about the region.

Troubled Sands

The expedition witnessed the massive rock pillars that jutted out of the sands and experienced the severe lack of moisture in the air. In their short time in The Expanse, it seemed as though there was a minor earth quake every thirty minutes or so, and a massive one every few hours. Small tornado like wind storms buffetted their expedition, which they dubbed 'sand devils.' On one harrowing earth quake one of the rock pillars toppled underneath the shifting earth killing several members of the group.

There are a few theories as to why the landscape is the way it is. Some members of the Cartographers and Reliquary surmise that there are a innumurable amount of small plates of rock deep under the sand that constantly grind the earth. Others believe that there are massive creatures that live just below the sand causing the same effect. Still others may think that beyond the expanse is one of the homes of the Tir and they merely desire privacy. The people of Elturia may never know until they can devise a way to travel The Expanse.
