Weaving
What is weaving?
Weaving is the primary form of magic throughout the world. It is the art of engraving runic knots, elaborate symbols analogous to patterns in the shroud but acted out through a physical medium to guid the flows of energy, to create a permanant weave of magic. Weaving can create permanant magical items, consumable items, and perform ritual magic. Weaving is slow and require preparation and materials, it is not typically used in combat, though weaves are often used to create useful items and effects before combat starts.
What is needed to weave?
All weaves take a certain amount of MP and time and require material components and tools to carve the runic knot. Weaves do not need to be completed all at once, the work can be done across several work sessions, allowing the weaver to rest and recover MP and finish larger projects. Weavers must practice and learn specific weaves before they can create them.
How do I create a weave?
The Weaving Skill is used to create weaves. When the requisite materials have been gathered and prepared a weaver can attempt to create a weave they know by rolling a Weaving skill check and committing the stated amount of time for the project. If the weaver takes breaks, each session requires its own Weaving skill check.
If any of these checks are failed, the weave is not created and the MP and time is still spent, however the material components are not spent and work the weave can be attempted again. This means a failed skill check when creating a large project does not completely ruin all the work from previous sessions and work can be continued in another session. Upon a fumble however, the above happens but the material components are also lost, rendering all previous work unusable forcing the weave to be restarted completely.
How do I learn new weaves?
Weaves are usually taught to characters by other mentors or teachers and are often fiercely gaurded secrets. Guilds, cults, governments, and reclusive researches alike all hoard their weaves and give out information with care. Basic, usually harmless, weaves can ocasionally be found as common folk magic in certain parts of the world.
A dedicated person who understood how to weave could create new weaves themselves however, through a process of trial and error. While creating a weave, the weaver can attempt to make changes to the effects of the weave, increasing the difficulty grade of the Weaving skill checks. After enough practice creating the same or similar adjustments repeatedly to a weave, the character can create a new weave with the adjustments already in it, which now no longer increases the difficulty grade.
For example, if the weave created a fireball on command but the weaver wanted it to be a ball of acid instead or have a longer range, they could increase the difficulty grade to attempt to alter the weave. The exact amount of difficulty is dependent on the adjustments desired, and is left to the GM to determine.
