Al'karathag, the Silver Shadow (Al-are-uh-thag)

Spoken of by sailors in Yathra Silthame, Al'karathag is a mythical sea creature believed to stalk the crystal waves of the Bay of Silver. Similar to Ar'guzan, Al'karathag has numerous legends, events, and depictions associated with it.

Depictions

Al'karathag is most commonly named a kraken. Sailors and naval Silverguard believe it is one, and so that is the iconography that is most often spread; however, there has been more than one beached shipwreck with markings from a titanic dragon turtle, and a kuo'toa village or two that has been discovered with iconography depicting a huge sea serpent. Perhaps these are all different creatures attributed the same name, or some are just blatantly false and only one is the true form of Al'karathag. It is truly a mystery.

A Legend

Al'karathag has numerous shipwrecks and ship disappearances attributed to it. The first recorded mentioning of Al'karathag was a series of tavern conversations that were recorded by a historian in Yathra Silthame in the early third century AT. It was a tavern favored by sailors, and the conversation was between a supposed survivor of a merchant fleet that was, as she claimed, attacked by a titanic sea beast fifty miles from port. Since then, the legend of Al'karathag, as it has since been named, has only grown.   Now, any ship disappearance without an empirically-proven cause is attributed to Al'karathag. While there are smaller sea beasts known to lurk the Bay of Silver, Al'karathag now occupies the same mythical position of terror in the Bay of Silver that Ar'guzan holds in the Obsidian Ocean; as such, many things get attributed to it, whether or not they are true.

A Leviathan of Unknown Origin

If Al'karathag is real, it is unknown where it came from. Some say it is a natural apex predator, and that the Bay of Silver is its territory. Others think that it is a remnant of the Reckoning, a titanic leviathan put in the Bay by the Obsidian Lords to blockade Yathra Silthame -- or by the Children of Yamma to defend it, and that it has lost its divine purpose. Others still think it is something else entirely: something from Tudulion or Atithis that came through a planar rift, or a great beast from Xeccamund that arrived on a meteor or some other cosmic event. Who knows?
