Cometfall
Created by the first great kingdom to unite what is now known as the Ioturan Heartland, the Ethorithians, Cometfall is a warhammer nearly unrivaled in power. Forged from a comet that slammed down somewhere in the Heartland, the Ethorithians put all of their remarkable craftsmanship (mundane and otherwise) into forging a hammer for the gods. Once it was completed, it was presented to Yamma, the Silver Dawn, as a gift. In one of the only instances of the gods walking on Emaxus during the Age of Rebirth, Yamma himself arrived not to accept, but to decline the Ethorithians' gift.
Instead, he told them that they must forge their own path, and claim their own destiny. Emaxus was shaped by the gods for their children, mortals. So, he blessed the hammer, holding it in his hands and remarking how far they had come. It is believed he spoke with paternal-like pride. He then gave it back to them and told them to use it as a method of stopping fallen mortals and other dark influences from claiming what they had worked so hard to build.
The Legend
What exactly Ethorith did with Cometfall before it was sealed away, little is known; however, when the Sorcerer-Queen Agormith fractured the kingdom and began her own empire in a war of aggression against Ethorith, Cometfall was hidden. The Vault of the Forgotten was built near the edge of the Steldurn Wood, and the god-hammer was hidden underground. While Ethorith claimed that this was so as to prevent Agormith from claiming it and using it for ill (which could've been a valid concern), this was also done due to the Ethorithians' greed. They couldn't even bear the thought of someone from outside their kingdom wielding the pinnacle of their work, and they selfishly sought to hide it away. But, the Silver Dawn intended Cometfall to be used for mortals to forge their own destiny, and help guide Emaxus forward into the future by its greatest champions. So, though the hammer's power has become dormant, and it has waited for many centuries down in its Vault, the day will come where Cometfall returns to the hand of a mortal hero and helps them forge their legend. The Remnant
warhammer, legendary, requires attunement After several millennia in the Vault of the Forgotten, Cometfall has become dormant; however, once it falls into the hands of a mortal hero, it will begin to reawaken, just as the strength in their soul awakens the same.Dormant
In its dormant form, Cometfall appears as a normal, albeit extremely well-fashioned, warhammer (as it appears in the cover art). The light within its core is faint, a spark hinting at the flame which will soon grow. It is strong, and some of its power remains, but much of its strength must be reawakened.Properties
- The wielder has a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this weapon.
- Guardian of Mortality. Attacks made with Cometfall deal an additional 1d6 radiant damage.
- Nowhere to Hide. The wielder gains the Siege effect of being able to deal double damage to objects and structures with this weapon.
Awakened
Through trials and tribulations, Cometfall will begin to reawaken as the power of its wielder grows. The spark in the core of the weapon has grown into a small orb of golden divine light, and when the weapon strikes its inner light flashes through the many decorative slots of the hammer head.Properties
- The wielder has a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this weapon.
- Guardian of Mortality. Attacks made with Cometfall deal an additional 1d8 radiant damage.
- Nowhere to Hide. The wielder gains the Siege effect of being able to deal double damage to objects and structures with this weapon.
- Dawn's Might. The wielder gains advantage on all Strength (Athletics) checks, including those made to grapple another creature.
- Radiance. Cometfall sheds dim light in a 5-foot radius. As an action, the wielder can cause the light to flare up for one minute, shedding bright light out in a 15-foot radius, and dim light in an additional 15-foot radius. While this feature is active, the bonus radiant damage of the Guardian of Mortality feature is increased to 2d8. The wielder can then end this feature as a bonus action. This feature can be used a number of times equal to the wielder's proficiency bonus, recovering all expended uses at dawn.
Exalted
At a moment of great struggle (or triumph), the true power of Cometfall as the Silver Dawn originally blessed it is revealed. The star within the hammer's core blazes at full fury, flares of divine, flame-like energy radiating from the open holes on both sides of the hammer's head, and divine magic courses through the hammer's metallic frame when it is being wielded in combat.Properties
- The wielder has a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this weapon.
- Guardian of Mortality. Attacks made with Cometfall deal an additional 1d12 radiant damage.
- Nowhere to Hide. The wielder gains the Siege effect of being able to deal double damage to objects and structures with this weapon.
- Dawn's Might. The wielder gains advantage on all Strength (Athletics) checks, including those made to grapple another creature.
- Radiance. Cometfall sheds bright light in a 15-foot radius and dim light in an additional 15-foot radius. As an action, the wielder can cause the light to flare up for one minute, shedding bright light out in a 30-foot radius, and dim light in an additional 30-foot radius. While this feature is active, the bonus radiant damage of the Guardian of Mortality feature is increased to 2d12. The wielder can then end this feature as a bonus action. This feature can be used a number of times equal to the wielder's proficiency bonus, recovering all expended uses at dawn.
- Cometfall. As an action, the wielder can slam Cometfall into the ground, forcing every creature of their choice within a 30-foot radius to make a Strength saving throw as the ground buckles and divine light explodes from the hammer. Each creature within the radius takes 5d8 radiant damage and 5d8 bludgeoning damage and is knocked prone on a failure, or half as much damage and is not knocked prone on a success. This feature can be used once per long rest.
Cometfall's Origin
During the early years of the Age of Rebirth, a comet impacted somewhere in the Ioturan Heartland (it is rumored the Stafmere Beck was created by it) and laid within its crater for decades. Eventually, the explorers of the growing kingdom of Ethorith discovered it, and their arcanists recognized its incredible potential. Passing it along to their legendary arcane craftsman, the Ethorithians set about forging a hammer as a gift to the Silver Dawn, who they wished to give thanks to. Using ancient obsidian mined from deep beneath the Atarth Mountains for the haft, bound in leathers stained and tanned from the skins of the hippogryphs of the Mayfair Plains, the Ethorithian forgemasters then created the hammerhead itself from the heart of the comet. Imbuing the hammer with all of the beauty and power their mortal hands could muster, the Ethorithians then called forth to Yamma, presenting the hammer as their gift to their Prime Deity; however, when he arrived to see what they wanted (in one of the few instances of the Children of Yamma walking Emaxus between the Reshaping and the Reckoning), he declined the gift. Instead, he took it in his hands and blessed it, creating an empty space within the center of the hammer and filling it with divine light. He told the Ethorithians that they must forge their own path, as the Children of Yamma had created the world for their children -- for them. And so, he gave it back to the Ethorithians and departed, having left his blessing in their hands. From that day forward, the hammer (now known as Cometfall) would be the icon of the Ethorithians, and they used it to forge an empire that spanned the entirety of what is now known as the Heartland.
