Alignment
The preferred alignment of all lycanthropes is Chaotic Evil. Natural lycanthropes, however, can be of any alignment, though the majority are Chaotic Evil. Afflicted lycanthropes tend to be Chaotic Evil as well, though strong willed individuals may shake off the evil tendencies and retain their original alignment (see below).
Lycanthropy as an Affliction
When a character contracts lycanthropy through a lycanthrope’s bite, no symptoms appear until the first night of the next full moon. On that night, the afflicted character involuntarily assumes animal form and forgets his or her own identity, temporarily becoming an NPC under the DM’s control. The character remains in animal form, assuming the Chaotic Evil alignment, until the next dawn. The character remembers nothing about the entire episode (or subsequent episodes) unless he succeeds on a DC 15 Wisdom check, in which case he becomes aware of his lycanthropic condition.
Thereafter, the character is subject to involuntary transformation under the full moon or whenever damaged in combat after accumulating enough damage to reduce his hit points by one-quarter and again after each additional one-quarter lost. He or she feels an overwhelming rage building up and must succeed on a Control Shape check (Monster Manual page 303) to resist changing into animal form. Any character not yet aware of his or her lycanthropic condition temporarily becomes an NPC under the DM’s control during an involuntary change.
A character with awareness of his condition retains his identity and does not lose control of his actions if he changes. In addition, an afflicted lycanthrope aware of his condition can now voluntarily attempt to change to animal or hybrid form, using the appropriate Control Shape check (Monster Manual page 303). The first time a character with awareness of his condition changes, he must make a Will save (DC15 for an involuntary change or DC 20 for a voluntary change) or permanently assume the Chaotic Evil alignment. With a successful save, the character will retain his original alignment upon future changes (voluntary or involuntary) without the need for an additional Will saving throw.
