Chronicler
"To insure domestic veracity, provide for a common truth, promote general knowledge to ourselves an our posterity..." - Premier Sengras Lacey updating the charge of the Chroniclers (Marothell)Most widely known in Marothell, Chronicler is a position of varying importance in multiple nations on the continent of Emergo.
Chroniclers - Marothell
As the Republic of Marothell coalesced from the city-states that had existed in the previous age, a great melding needed to occur to forge bonds and foster a unified nation if they wanted to avoid being usurped by the massive nations neighboring them. The first government of Marothell, under Premier Rhea Cromwell, created a corp of Chroniclers to bolster relations among the cities of the Republic by drafting an official ledger of notable actions, feats, and legends of the young nation. The Chroniclers would draft, assemble, and edit the Tome of Truth, then present their findings to the Master of Truth for submission to the Premier and ultimately for distribution to all citizens of the Republic. While the initial charge of the Chroniclers was to create a shared history for the young nation that would be taught in schools and in time overshadow the legends of the city-state era, early editions were met with harsh judgement by any faction that was not in power at the time, resulting in revisions and contradictions in subsequent tomes. In 165 YR, Premier Sengras Lacey decreed that the Tome of Truth must be a document of all people of Marothell, explicitly permitting the recording of legends that updated previously held opinions, as well as those that were not entirely flattering to elected officials, political factions, neighboring states, or any of the recognized gods. The new measure of what should be included in the Tome of Truth was whether or not it was knowledge that all citizens should know. In 300 YR, many position the Tome of Truth as the antithesis of Sirastir's official dispatches. The Master of Truth
At the head of the Chroniclers corps is a singular minister appointed by the Premier to operate as the Master of Truth. This position naturally sits on the privy council, and is tasked with both administrative and ceremonial duties in support of the culture of the Republic. The Master of Truth is responsible for endorsing or rejecting the findings in each edition of the Tome of Truth, as well as intermittent dispatches to other ministries within the Republic as word of interesting finds reach his ears. It is for this last point that some Masters of Truth have also been rumored to operate as spy masters within the Republic, an assertion broadly rejected by several Premiers. Over the 170 years since the position was created, there have been 23 different Masters of Truth in Marothell, with some serving under multiple consecutive Premiers, while others left the post to return later in life, such as in the case of Njorne after the death of his apprentice Grumbar Winthrop in 215 YR. Since 250 YR, each outgoing Master of Truth has also overseen the creation of a two specific manuals. The first is a tome that summarizes the major events of their tenure. Each such tome classically contains the Master's name in the title, such as Grice's Basic Instructions printed in 295 YR. In addition, they personally pen any updates needed for a new edition of the Essential Tome, a single book that contains the "must know" information for new citizens, merchants, and visitors.Voice of the People - Dolorne
In the Grand Duchy of Dolorne, a branch of the current government styles itself as the Voice of the People. These officials wear uniforms that resemble more ostentatious versions of the Marothell Chronicler's official garb and carry an enchanted osterich feather for drafting their official summaries each day. Established in 290 YR by Lord Garrick, the Voices travel throughout the Duchy with the regularity and warm welcome of a tax collector. Often seen writing on a single sheet of parchment that never runs out, a typical visit from one of the Voices culminates in a list of new edicts from Lord Garrick tacked to the door of the largest building in town.Lore Keeper - Ogria
As a nation that favors its elders, Ogria has a wealth of tradition and living history entwined with its day-to-day operations. The job of the local Lore Keeper in Ogria is to speak with those who've passed on prematurely and determine what knowledge they were the sole owners of, so that it may be learned by them and recorded in their own memoirs prior to death. Being a Lore Keeper does not require worship of any specific deity, but it is most common that they follow Kelemvor, Ioun, or Paladine.Remove these ads. Join the Worldbuilders Guild
