Automaton

Automatons are the creations of the Nameless Empire. Once mass produced by the millions, they were created to serve the humans of the Nameless Empire at the height of prosperity and greatness. Forged from nearly unlimited power sources and the finest metals available to the ancients, these beings were intelligent servitors with only limited capacity for free thought and action. Today the automatons that survive have begun to evolve their own capacity for free thought and exploration, migrating throughout the world.

Automatons in D&D Fifth Edition

Your automaton character has the following traits. A few of the traits give you a choice; consider how your choice reflects the purpose for which your character was built.   Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 2, and one other ability score of your choice increases by 1.   Age. A typical automaton is between one thousand and twelve hundred years old. Automatons tend to decay after time, but if one keeps repaired, there's no telling how long they could persist.   Alignment. Most automatons take comfort in order and routine, tending toward law and neutrality. But some have absorbed the morality, or lack thereof, of the beings with which they served.   Size. Your size is Medium.   Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.   Constructed Resilience. You were created to have remarkable fortitude, represented by the following benefits: You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, and you have resistance to poison damage. You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe. You are immune to disease. You don’t need to sleep, but sleep magic can put you into an inactive state.   Sentry’s Rest. When you take a long rest, you must spend at least six hours in an inactive, motionless state, rather than sleeping. In this state, you appear inert, but it doesn’t render you unconscious, and you can see and hear as normal.   Integrated Protection. Your body has built-in defensive layers, which can be enhanced with armor: You gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class. You can don only armor with which you have proficiency. To don armor, you must incorporate it into your body over the course of 1 hour, during which you remain in contact with the armor. To doff armor, you must spend 1 hour removing it. You can rest while donning or doffing armor in this way. While you live, your armor can’t be removed from your body against your will.   Specialized Design. You gain one skill proficiency and one tool proficiency of your choice.   Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and two other languages of your choice. You can only learn up to three languages, regardless of backgrounds. However, you can spend a long rest with a creature that knows another language and choose to forget one of the languages you know in exchange for that language in that long rest.

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

Automatons cannot reproduce, as the industries which once allowed for it have long since been destroyed. The knowledge needed to make the machines that made the machines to make the automatons is long since gone. Those that exist are those that continue to remain from the ancient times of the Nameless Empire, and as they are destroyed, the last pieces of that civilization slowly disappear.

Growth Rate & Stages

As there is no reproduction of automatons, the only ones that exist were built over one thousand years ago. Therefore, all existing automatons are between 1,000 - 1,200 years old. Some have decayed over time, losing long forgotten cognitive and physical abilities as their programming and equipment have deteriorated. Despite this, reports have been made that some automatons have successfully repaired or upgraded themselves with the passage of time. Some have even obtained or recovered new and old abilities to allow them to improve functions.

Ecology and Habitats

Automatons can be found in a variety of habitats, but mostly within the long shattered ruins of the Nameless Empire. It is believed that hordes of hundreds of them exist in the Deadlands to the north, mindlessly continuing the same programs that they have had for the past thousand years. Those in wetter environments have been known to decay faster, as their joints rust and fall apart.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Automatons take on the names they were assigned at their creation, usually a sequence of somewhat random numbers and letters. No one understands why they are named these strange designations, but the free-willed automata take pride in their designations and being able to recall them after hundreds of years of existence.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

It is often said that automata have forgotten more languages than most humans could possibly learn in a lifetime. That is often true, as it seems that automata have a difficult time retaining languages. They frequently replace older disused languages with more modern ones, but fortunately, they seem to have an in-built gift for new ones.

History

The automatons were created to make the lives of humans easier in the Nameless Empire. As the Empire's economy prospered from its many global conquests, the wealth of its citizens grew exponentially. Many no longer wanted to perform everyday chores or dull professions. To this end the automaton was created to replace humans involved in the laborer work of society. In some places this was resisted, even violently, but by the time of the war, it seemed that the day of human labor was at an end, as automatons became more and more the foundation of the working class. They were kept without personality and free thought, making them the perfect worker.   The War and the fall of the Nameless Empire initially had little effect on the automatons who survived the initial destruction. They continued to perform the tasks that they had been assigned, even if they were no longer needed. They maintained roads that no one used, served dinners to empty restaurants, and mined iron and coal for people who no longer needed it. Some automatons continue to do this. Others were lost to attacks by human scavengers looking for parts and magical items. Some, however, began to take on lives of their own, beginning to wonder why they continued serving long dead masters. These began wandering the world. Automatons can be found all over, often regarded with superstitious dread by many humans.
