High General Raymond Baker
Raymond Baker descends from the Villages Bakers, a renowned family of entertainers and actors. He was born into the acting troupe but frequently expressed discontent with their lifestyle and choices, always on the edge of poverty, despite their fame and successes in their careers. His parents scraped up what they could to provide him with an education at the Imperial University, giving him every opportunity to learn new ways of making his own path in the Jakonian Empire. He discovered that he had an aptitude for magic, and entered into a course training to become a wizard.
After completing training and his magical curriculum over the course of fifteen years, Raymond began to seek out a lifestyle befitting his new training. He was recruited by the Imperial Army for service in 968, which was always on the lookout for talented spellcasters with inherent abilities. Aware that the biases of the Church of the One Sun and the aristocracy would be unlikely to allow a halfling to succeed in the ranks of any of the private armies or courts, Raymond accepted the offer and was immediately commissioned as an officer in the ranks of the armed forces.
During times of peace, like those that the Empire were engaged in, there was little need for much aggressive spellcasting, but ample need for interrogators and wards against espionage. Raymond found his calling in military intelligence, organizing counterintelligence operations and defending against those who would undermine the security of the armed forces. He moved through the ranks of the intelligence apparatus with considerable ease, and enjoyed being able to stay at home in the Imperial City, rather than having to worry about deployment to the peripheries of the empire. He rose slowly through the ranks, married a halfling woman native to the city, and settled down for several long decades.
The independence of Capcora and Augustin led to a great rise in espionage along the Jakonian Peninsula, and Raymond soon found himself engaged in suppression efforts against Nasites rebels and nobles who threatened the peace. In the course of his duties, he came into possession of a myriad of compromising details and information about the ranks of the upper class throughout Jakonia. This knowledge and his position at last allowed him to come into his own as the leader of counterintelligence, and his promotion to general. Seeking to engage a powerful ally in the ranks of the Imperial Armor, Emperor Allen appointed Raymond to the position of High General in 1024 AF. Since then, he has done his best to maintain the autonomy and power of the Imperial Army.
