Tyee Cotaw
Tyee Cotaw was born to a half-elf and a human in the Cotaw Tribe, and was never truly felt to be a member of the community for a long time. His father was a trapper who explored the region and captured furs and pelts for the people, while his mother settled down after an early lifetime of adventure and trade across the Sypi Confederacy. His mother's wanderlust had a lasting impact upon Tyee, who found a similar urge driving him. He took his father's trade and became a trapper and hunter for the Cotaw, but he was best known for ranging far and wide, often into the territories of other tribes. When he was just nineteen, he ended up in a dispute with a Yurfac trapper, and the Yurfac ended up dead in the resulting struggle.
Terrified of the consequences, Tyee fled his tribe and took shelter within the River Watch, providing a false name and taking up as a warrior for the Watch. He served admirably, and his aptitude for laying traps and hunting proved transferrable to the constant fight and vigil against the raids of giants. In time Tyee rose through the ranks and took more and more responsibility upon himself to lead those under his command. In 1008, his original ruse was exposed when a Yurfac trading to Old Crossing Keep recognized him. The Yurfacs appealed to the River Watch to release Tyee to justice, but a lack of enthusiasm among the tribes for further prosecution quickly brought the matter to an end as the only child of the slain trapper declined to press any charges.
With his identity exposed, Tyee found himself less trusted among his friends in the River Watch, and he redoubled his efforts to prove himself and show that not everything was an act. Once more his feats demonstrated his skills and abilities, and he was promoted to Commander of the River Watch in 1015. He was assigned to the prestigious post of Old Crossing Keep, headquarters of the River Watch, and offered the post to observe and protect the crossing. He became a proponent of neutrality in the Sypi Civil War, and gained some notoriety when he refused to commit himself to the conflict even after the Watch was forced in. His neutrality earned him some respect and he quickly became a controversial figure among both the Watch and the Confederacy. After the war ended, he has continued to aid in the trapping and slaying of giants that cross in the region.
