Inktober V: Infected

Though most Generates are able to keep their growth in check, there are times when their body, if not taken care of, will drive itself into ruin. Generates are humanoids that are compelled by some change brought about by the Cataclysm to simply grow from conception, like most of the other species in the plains region. This is commonly referred to as Greallot's Disease or generative sickness.   From conception, the fetus afflicted with Greallot's will grow rapidly form, sometimes so quickly that it may become stuck before it can be properly birthed. The chances of this are reduced from taking Unambulen, an elixir that can slightly slow the process of growth so the child has time to latch onto a proper birthing canal. However, Unambulen's effects only last until several weeks after the child is born, at which point the growths will begin sprouting in various places on the body.   Most growths that appear on species afflicted by Greallot's are simply of excess skin or fat on a random portion of the body, though if given enough time, they may grow into limbs, organs, or even separate organisms as in the case of Cassalea and Behlume*. While these may be of some use, many of these end up being vestigial, and even more are known to be harmful to the afflicted. For instance, a growth that is allowed to form over or behind the eyes will cause blindness, or allowing the body itself to grow as a whole will eventually cause it to become a cancerous mass that expends more energy than it can take in.   To combat these growths, the most popular method is culling, in which the extraneous flesh is cut off from the body. Due to the speed that flesh grows under Greallot's's influence, it is recommended that culling occurs anywhere from twice a day to once every three days depending on the severity. Alchemists are currently working on a more effective strain of Unambulen that can be administered well into the generate's adult life, though it is a careful balancing act between having no effect and causing acute degeneration of the host's body.   *Cassalea and Behlume are 2 generates who were born in 1340 originally as Cassalea. When she refused to cull her growths as a child and continued to let them grow, eventually they became Behlume, who researchers of the Godhands referred to as a separate entity with an entirely different consciousness. The two died of Greallot's in 1351.
