Inktober XVI: Rites

Baykeeping, or warding, is the traditional act of the Spirit Scions in attempt to expel mortality from the body, allowing space for the spirits to find harbor and refuge in.

History

The practice of baykeeping started in 1407, only a few years after the inception of the Spirit Scions. While this was traditionally done with two days of fasting, it was later declared that ridding the body of food could only accomplish so much, and that the mind must be emptied as well. This eventually grew into the event as it is today, with those chosen to be sent off the coast in a small boat with nothing in or on their person for three moons, at which point they are sent after by other members.

Effects

Though baykeeping only has a 79.3% survival rate, many Spirit Scions claim that it has enlightening effects on the mind and body that more than compensate for the risks. Those who undertake the trial claim clarity in every sense, a feeling of lightness, clear thinking, focus, and a renewed outlook on the life of themselves and the spirits. Several doctors have written these off as side-effects of dehydration and isolation, but the Spirit Scions swear by them.
