Great Tortle Hatching

History

Starting over 500 years ago, Zelathor Isles faced an unfortunate drought and epidemic at the same time. Consequently, the Tortle population in the Isles lost more than 85% of their population over the course of 3 years. Not yet a fully religious community, they faced this tragedy with no hope, nowhere to turn to. After long, difficult decisions, to try and get rid of the disease they culled the sick. Needing to repopulate the Tortles had a massive rebreeding, resulting in thousands of Tortles being born in one year. To attempt to keep epidemic risks to a minimum and conserve food supplies, the repopulation was only allowed within certain time frames, once every 12 years, now deemed the Great Tortle Hatching.

Participants

After the original Great Hatching, the leaders of the tribes in Zelathor Isles wanted to create a more advanced society and limited the participants to those that were chosen by the leaders themselves. Those chosen typically had stronger traits and genetics that would benefit their society more. Two years leading up to each Great Hatching there is a set of tests that each willing participant must go through to determine their value to the pool of candidates, and from their a set number are chosen.
