Education and the Q'tari Academies in Jarynos
Education and the Academies in Jarynos
(the The Q'tari city beneath Couvaros, the mineral behemoth): Education is taken care of at home (within a family “house,” referring to the extended family and honorary members rather than a structure) for all q’tari, and while that isn’t completely equitable, it’s not as bad as it sounds. Q’tari tend to live in extended families (the ultra-rich sometimes live apart from their families, but even then, they usually just by larger homes so they don’t have to see them if they don’t want to). As a result, there tends to be someone at home suited to teaching. While this is often a couple of older family members splitting the duties according to expertise, it is sometimes a younger family member who wants the experience. While is no “public library” per se, the library at the University of Elumar amounts to the same thing, and it’s an excellent library. In any case, education at home is culturally important, and students tend to learn about a wide variety of subjects. When they reach the age of 12, there’s a rite of passage into early adulthood and students can choose what they wish to study; they are on their own at this point, and many head directly to apprenticeships. Others stick to it, hoping to enter the university or one of the academies. Those with aspirations that require more education may apply for The University of Elumar. This is a free university run by members of The Ninth Eye, the city’s mage guild. It is free, but it’s highly sought-after, and students without academic prowess will not do well on the entrance exam. There are other options, however, by way of the academies. These are, essentially, house colleges. There are many, but nine stand at the top. Each subspecies of q’tari has two house academies except for the griseri, who have three. If you are born to a house, you have automatic entrance to your house academy, though many are not interested in their house’s specialty. House tokens are given to house members when they have their coming of age ceremonies; these tokens can be traded for entry to other houses. They do not have to be accepted, as some houses are more popular than others (Heroics, Secrecy, and Knowledge are the most difficult to get into…tokens from these houses will net you admittance in any of the other houses, including a 1:1 trade into one of the other top academies.) Those from small and medium-sized houses often stay where they are and accept a less prestigious academy, as their tokens are not from one of the nine houses. Even the smallest house has an academy, as it’s a matter of cultural pride, but some are literally one room basements. That said, the nine academies have scouts and they are always looking for talent. There are yearly festivals held by each house, and at the festival they announce winners to the yearly contests they hold. Osu Deradis, for example, has a poetry contest, among others. The winner or winners gain admittance to the Academy of Music and the Fine Arts. All academies are free, as all students are accepted as honorary members of the academy’s house, and are thereby entitled to the same education as any other house members. That said, it can be expensive to run the academies. Most will accept “gifts” of money or goods in exchange for a student, provided that the payment is at least twice what it will cost to accept the student so less fortunate members found by scouts can be accommodated.
