The Fork; Eating Implement of the Noble
The fork is a small metal object that noblemen use when eating. No farmer is ever successful enough to be able to buy a metal fork, they almost always make do with a wooden fork or nothing at all. However, they do make use of pitchforks, but that is a different matter entirely. The fork is only important for noblemen, as the food they eat and etiquette demands that they use it. The farmer eats bread, porridge, and other such simple foods which require a knife, spoon, or no implement at all. Thus they need the fork less than the noblemen of Erce, who eat messier foods such as roast duck, carefully decorated cakes, and the like. More often than not the entire set of cutlery and silverware of a noble is made of metal, perhaps even with some form of decoration upon the pieces of the set.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
Forks are pieces of metal, and have no inner workings. However, they are usually decorated in the most beautiful matter, and noblemen have been known, on occasion, to buy a particularly beautiful fork for as much as a gold piece! This is of course far overpriced, and they were well fleeced by the merchant who sold them the fork at such an extravagant price, but as long as the merchant and the nobleman are happy who is there to complain? Since the forks that noblemen use are metal, any form of decoration they may have is generally metal as well, although the ruler of the land may have inlaid gems in their silverware. Some of the forms of decoration that may appear upon forks include metal roses and vines climbing up the handle, beautiful geometric patterns of gold carefully inlaid into the silver, and small, smooth gems or pearls set into the silver in such a way they are pleasing to the eye.
