Sea Raven

A bunch of dark shapes jumped from the water and glided towards us, then going into the opposite direction. "Sea ravens," said Flint. "And they are running from something."   "Black flags!" said the watchman one second later. "It's The Silent!"   Far in the horizon we saw the black flag for the first time, the flag that would change our lives forever.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The sea raven is a small fish that can be found in Talung's west and northwestern coast.   Its black color and head shape may resemble a black bird for some, but that's not where it takes its name from. The most incredible capability of the sea raven is the "fly": the fish jumps out of the water and glides in the air, opening its wide fins.

Genetics and Reproduction

Two times in the year, the couple mates. Then the female lay eggs, usually under a rock or other place like that. Two months later, 40 to 60 little sea ravens are ready for the world.

Growth Rate & Stages

The sea raven grows for 6 months, when it's considered an adult.   After approximately 5 years, their bigger fins start to fail and they will jump lower and lower until they finally only swim. At this stage, their sense of preservation makes them the last of the fleet, the ones who may get eaten if the group is pursued by a predator.

Ecology and Habitats

The sea raven lives in warm and salty waters, and is more frequently seen in low latitudes.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Sea ravens always travel in fleets. They are omnivores and will eat small fishes, seaweed and other tiny creatures of the sea.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Mostly around the equatorial line. Rarely seen beyond tropical latitudes.

Average Intelligence

The sea ravens are smart enough to act together. The fleet can work in group to scare predators, and sometimes the older ones lure them away, sacrificing themselves.
