The Essun Comms

To the southeast are the Essun Comms, a large expanse of green canyons, valleys, rifts, and steep walled inlets along the coast. It is the home of over hundreds of small comms–communities, each with several hundred to a thousand people. For many years the core groups of the Essun Comms surrounding Nassun were so hard to navigate to outsiders, the relatively light fighting units of the comms took on even Empire forces. As a show of desired unity, a previous Emperor, unguarded, walked with an Essun envoy and spent a week with them. After a week through their comms and a promise of protection, trade, and to never pave Empire roads through their valleys, a new alliance was formed. The Essun Comms is a large blend of people, but is home to more Lizardfolk than anywhere else in the Empire. There are 13 known languages in this region, the most common being three dialects of Danniah.

While the region has many languages and dialects, a common cultural element is honoring a good trade or good friends by trading names. This has lead to many common names throughout the Essun Comms. The common format for names is a given name, followed by communal role or occupation, followed by their community (town) name.   Common given names include:
Aadan Bontu Gadisa Kamaria Maxama Sisay
Abeba Cali Hibo Kamau Meklit Tadesse
Akinyi Chausiku Hiwot Kariuki Naliaka Xaawo
Awiti Eliud Hodan Lelisa Njeri Xaliima
Axmid Fadumo Juma Lencho Otieno Zephania
  Common community names:
Aberash Businge Gwandoya Marjani Odhiambo Wanjiku

Riding Life

Even to the people of the Essun Comms, where navigating steep cliffs of dense plant life and harsh underbrush is daily life, a preferred method of travel is atop a Dwng, or if well trained enough, carried by one.

In case anyone is curious, yes this is inspired heavily by The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemison.
