Poseiatic Ocean
"The Poseiatic Ocean probably holds more horrors within it than Tartarus, but that won't stop sailors from claiming they've tamed it." ~Levoith Silverscribe, Head Researcher of the Authenian Archives. The Poseiatic Ocean is the largest and most violent ocean in the realm. Named in honour of Poseidon himself, the Poseiatic Ocean is on the East side of Eregost, facing the Authenian Republic.
Geography
The Poseiatic Ocean is a deep, vibrant blue. If you go far enough East, you can find icebergs and large sheets of ice. The Western side of the Poseiatic Ocean is teal in colour, and is clearer to see through. Small rocky islands are scattered throughout the Ocean. The largest islands within the Poseiatic Ocean are Rhodesseum and Ithaca.
The bottom of the Poseiatic Ocean is covered in sand at the Western end, through the further East you go, the rockier it gets. Small underwater hot springs are scattered around the Western side, particularly around the island of Rhodesseum. Kelp, coral and seaweed cover the bottom of the Ocean, and these plants come in all colours, creating a beautiful underwater mosaic.
Climate
The Poseiatic waves are almost always violent, as Poseidon believes that relaxing the Oceans would be a sign of weakness. The winds are harsh and cold, capable of dooming inexperienced sailors. The island of Rhodesseum is one of the only places within the Poseiatic Ocean that has calm, warm winds and seas, which is thanks to the fact that the island is under the protection of the Titan God of the Sun, Helios.
Fauna & Flora
Sealions are a very common sight throughout the Poseiatic sea. Some have been known to jump onto small boats during the night whilst everyone is asleep so that they can rest of the deck. They mostly eat small fish. Seeing groups of sealions before a long voyage is considered good luck in the Authenian Republic.
Sandcrabs are large, sand coloured crabs with extremely thick shells. They have large pincers which they use to eat small fish and sea snails. They are roughly the same size as a human's torso.
Basking sharks are found in the colder, Eastern side of the Poseiatic Ocean. They feed on plankton and small schools of fish. They are well adjusted to the harsh cold and can live for centuries.
Dolphins are now found within the warmer parts of the Poseiatic Ocean. When the god Dionysus was wandering the earth, he was captured by pirates who intended to either violate him or sell him into slavery. Dionysus responded by turning into a lion, filling the boat with vines and the sounds of flutes and turning the pirates insane. As the pirates leapt into the ocean, Dionysus turned them into the first dolphins.
The top predator within the Poseiatic Ocean would have to be the Dragon Turtles. Dragon turtles are large, aquatic dragons the size of ships, with a protective shell. They can exhale a scalding steam at will, capable of killing their prey. Dragon turtles regularly kill sharks and whales for food, and are even known to sink ships in order to eat their crew. Compared to most dragons, Turtle dragons are rather simple minded, with little motivation beyond hunting and surviving.
Natural Resources
"The Poseiatic sea is a hostile place, and its master is a cruel and unforgiving one. But to those that can endure its wrath may have a chance to reap the spoils of the Seas." ~Odysseus, King of the Island Kingdom of Ithaca.Fishermen experienced enough to be able to withstand the harsh weather are able to bring in large amounts of fish. Mostly sardines, sea bass, tuna and amberjacks. Other fishing vessels gather sandcrabs and brass shrimp. Large amounts of seaweed is harvested from the Ocean. This seaweed is used for multiple purposes, certain types can be eaten, others can be used to make soaps and dyes, some fibrous seaweed is even used to make clothing. The shells of sandcrabs can be used to hardened and treated in order to make armour. These shells are incredibly heat resistant, and are used to make protective gloves for blacksmiths. There are large deposits of bronze, iron and silver at the bottom of the Ocean. Many sailing merchants earn their fortune by trading goods with sea nymphs in exchange for these metals. These nymphs trade fairly, and both sides of these exchanges come out satisfied. The nymphs get goods and materials that they could never get at sea, and the merchants get access to these raw materials that they could never reach by themselves.
History
The Poseiatic Ocean was once under the control of the Titan Oceanus, though what it was called back then is unknown. After the Olympians defeated the Titans, the three sons of Cronos drew straws to decide which god would rule which part of the cosmos. Zeus won the Sky and Hades inherited the Underworld, but Poseidon was given dominion over the seas, and has claimed the Poseiatic Ocean as his home.
Tourism
On the Eastern end of the Poseiatic Ocean, lies a blood red cloud settled just above the surface of the Ocean. It has been dubbed "The Invading Cloud" by scholars. The exact origin and nature of this anomaly is unknown, but nothing that enters the cloud ever comes out. The Invading Cloud is far away from Eregost, but is is ever so slowly moving closer. Scholars and mages try to get as close to the cloud as possible in order to study it.
Tourists from all over the continent like to go to the island of Rhodesseum, as the warm climate and abundance of exotic food and drinks make it an ideal location for both holidays and retirement. The city of Ilios earns a large portion of its income just from tourists.
