Lyr'alan

Written by Salen

The city of Lyr'alan is the hub of merchant traders on the Lake of Anadar. The City of Coins stands as a bastion of wealth and trade, being the largest trade city next to Tir-Onial in all of Erendor. Their docks are always bustling with ships from all over the area and they have more Inns than any other city. Situated in the southern edge of the lake, Lyr'alan attracts more visitors than every other city. Northern traders, eastern fisherman, and western boat captains, all converge here at the merchant circle just up from the famous docks.

Rebuilt

The city of Lyr'alan, was recently rebuilt after the calamity of the Dragon Caller. The great dragon Khaylandrial attacked the city with his breath of flame and laid waste to over half of the great city — including half of the docks. The archmage Salen Valari and the blademaster Shyi-Lhanna Nightstar evacuated most of the people and drove the beast away, but the destruction was too great. It took over a year and a half to rebuild but the city stands now as a reminder of that horrible time and what kind of destruction dragons can do when let loose. The newer parts of the city now house better buildings, an aqueduct that leads to the lake, and trees in most of the yards.

Demographics

75% human, 20% elven, and 5% half-elven.

Government

The city is run by the the Lady of Lyr’alan, Ulivia Onarian. The title of Lady is equal to Lord in this case, as she prefers this to anything else. The Lady answers directly to the council of Tir-Onial and in turn over sees the local Dukes in the smaller towns.

Defences

Not only does Lyr'alan have a heavy guard pressence, but there is now a Riders of Erendor barracks loctaed in the north of the city. This holds roughly fifty of the expert riders and if needed they can call for more.

Industry & Trade

Lyr'alan is a major port city on the Lake of Anadar and as such hosts one of the largest merchant gatherings in the area. Everyone comes here to pl their trade and the city makes a good deal on charging those merchants for the space to sell. Likewise the port has a hefty docking fee and a separate charge for merchant vessels as well.

Infrastructure

Lyr'alan boasts some of the best docks in the land, with cobblestone roads and stone pillars to tie the boats up to. Great metal chains can be dragged across the docks to lock in boats that fail to pay the docking fees and the roads are kept clean daily. The guard patrols these areas closely and takes pride in their low crime rate.

Assets

One can find anything in the merchant circle in Lyr'alan.

Guilds and Factions

The merchant guild has its headquarters here and as one of the oldest organization in Erendor, they are above the law in this city. They have most of the guards paid off and even the Lady Onarian turns a blind eye to their infractions. Not that they commit murder or anything, but any complaint lodged against the guild is swept under the rug so to speak.

History

One of the first settlements to be raised on the lake, Lyr'alan was always the place to come to sell your wares. The city blossomed into a bastion of trade and even came out of the dark war unscathed. It wasn't until about 900 years later that the city was attacked by the great dragon Khaylandrial, with the sorcerer Ravin Dar directing the destruction.

People were pointing to the far northern sky and calling out for the gods to save them, cowering in fear and fleeing inside. Salen turned with trepidation heavy in his heart; he knew what he would see. There on the horizon of the second day, as Sulan set for the evening, was a massive shadow, its wings blocking out a fair amount of light. The ground shook with its distant roar and Salen could only imagine its size if they could see it from this far away. Ravin Dar had done the impossible and called forth a dragon.   “Salen, is that what I think it is?” Shyi asked, the first words she had uttered for days. She drew her weapon reflexively and backed away as the shadow grew in size.   “Why, yes dear, it is. To answer your next question... yes it seems to be coming right for us.” From Dragon Caller, Rise of the Archmage book 1
