Ran'sin Daul

Watched over by the Pyrsic Brotherhood for over 800 years, the shores of Ran'sin Daul(Lake) are among one of the most visited pilgrimage locations in all of Velruun. Its waters have long attracted the attention of both healers and tyrants, though neither have been able to seize it. Such is however to be expected of the last gift of the gods.

History

As told in the Blessed Waters of Ran'sin Daul, the Daul was carved from the land by the god Sin, and filled with the tears of he and his brother Ran - the two of whom give the Daul it's name. The primitive ancestors of the modern residents of Gaelerad quickly established themselves along it's newly created shores. Scholars have recently discovered paintings on cave walls near the lake that all show the same thing; two pillars of light, one far taller than the other, shooting up from the lake towards the heavens.
The area was subsequently developed and there is evidence of several civilizations having started and abruptly stopped in the area over the following centuries. Eventually however it appears that the whole valley area was abandoned. The kingdom of Gaelerad sprung up around the mountains and surrounding area and remained unaware of the importance of the lake until almost 1000 years ago.
Initials surveys of the area were taken at the time and the area was cordoned off for study. After many years examining the area, the remnants of civilizations long gone, and the daul itself - it was decided that the area would be granted limited autonomy and placed under the control of the Pyrsic Brotherhood, as a holy site of Grand Divines. The reasoning for this is still under dispute however it is believed that even then the properties of the waters of the daul were well known to both the brotherhood as well as the kings council.
The Brotherhood has stood watch for the last 800 years, with occasional scuffles with neighbooring powers. Advantaged by their location close to the geographical center of the Kingdom of Gaelerad, they have had little to truly fear over their long vigil. However periodically, internal strife within the kingdom has caused them to operate less as an autonomous region, and more as an independant power of their own. They have however to this day maintained control over the waters of the daul.

Eye of Kurzon

Almost in the center of the lake lies a region known as the Eye of Kurzon. Named after the blade said to be carried by the god Sin, this portion of the lake is far darker than the surrounding waters. All attempts to find out how far down the water goes - either by sending down swimmers, or the user of magic have not resulted in finding the lakes bottom. It is believed that it may even decend into the center of the planet itself.

Waters of Darkness and Light

The waters of the daul posess strong magical properties. Over the course of their vigil, the brotherhood has determined that these affects are tied to light cast upon the waters. Waters that are collected in the light of dawn possess strong curative properties, even capable of bringing one back from the brink of death. Those collected during the day may cure minor ailments and alleviate aches and pains.
As light turns to darkness however the properties quickly turn malevolent. The waters of dusk will sap the strength of a warriors arm, and addle a mages mind. The waters of the night can poison a man, and if collected under the total darkness of a new moon, may even strike him dead.
The brotherhood believes these properties to be further proof of the role of the brothers in the daul's creation. The duality of the waters matches the duality of the brothers' roles as gods.

Pilgrim's Journey

As a major holy site - the brotherhood recieves many pilgrims wishing to see and partake of the waters of the daul. They attempt to control the access, knowing well the properties of the water, limiting it only to the daytime hours of full light. The pilgrims are especially plentiful in the spring and early summer, although their numbers begin to taper off as the surrounding forest begin's it's decent into winter. By the time the last leaves have fallen, only those souls who feel they have no longer to wait will be found on the paths leading the way to the daul.
