Goliaths

Descendants of giants, goliaths are mountains of people, between 7 to 8 feet tall, and reaching weights of up to 160kg. At home in the frozen tundra, woods and hills of the Northern Expanse, goliaths live very nomadic lifestyles, forming small communities, and living off the land.   To a goliath, their tribe is everything. Upon birth, you are given to the wardens who raise the young children in a large community home. Biological parents do not hold the importance to a goliath as they do for a human. Goliath numbers are too few for valuable members of their society to be held up by raising a child. For this reason these tribes have carers, known as wardens who raise the children, teaching them all manner of skills necessary for survival in the harsh, frozen north. This frees up valuable members of tribes such as hunters, smiths, tanners, and warriors to continue contributing to the benefit of the tribe.   There are no stereotypes between males and females in goliath society. With their numbers too few, they need the best people for each role regardless of gender. A female can just as easily be a warrior, hunter, or smith and a male can be a warden, cook, or tailor. Every member of the tribe is placed where their skills will best serve.   The leader of each tribe is called the Chief, and they are usually voted for by the tribe as a whole. The Chief is normally the wisest and most intelligent member of the tribe for it is they who guide their people. Goliaths are always on the move due to the shifting seasons and it is the Chiefs role to read the signs and move them in the correct course. An error in this role could spell disaster for the entire tribe. Winter in Ereth is cold, winter in the Northern Expanse is deadly.   Every tribesperson at a certain age will receive a tattoo of their tribes sigil. Normally etched upon their arm or face. This is a badge of honour and is not given lightly. For goliaths, the tribe is the most important part of life and to betray it is the worst thing they can possibly do. Should for some reason, a goliath cause harm, either direct or indirect towards the tribe, they are cast out, their tattoo cut from their body and are deemed Nameless. Goliaths do not have family names but instead take their tribes name as the second name. If they are cast out, that name is no longer part of them.   They do not tolerate outsiders, even goliaths from other tribes. The pain caused by the interference of strangers is still fresh, their numbers dwindled due to outside influences. Anyone encountering a goliath tribe should expect a hostile encounter.
