Sand Sweep

The Ushanni city of Armeria Maritima is renown for its glassblowers and mage-glass artisans, and their wares, but hardly anyone outside of the town have heard of the Sand Sweeps- unless they have had a run-in.

Quartz Crystal Sand

The sand of Armeria Maritima, or as the locals call it, Mari, is unlike any other sand on the coast. Since their formation, rock from the Cima Mountain Range has been carried down the Oror River and eventually out to the ocean, weathering and eroding the entire way. Once at sea, the current carries the rocks south, breaking them down even further to their smallest quartz crystals.   A mostly submerged mountain range near the Mari coast acts a breaker for the incoming waves, leaving only calm waves to lap the beach of Mari. These gentle waves can only carry the smallest silica sand to the shore, building a beach of soft, powdery sand. The quartz sand feels amazing to beach goers; it is also the perfect material for glass making.

Role of the Sweeps

Sand Sweeps are custodians of the beach and the only authorized sand dealers. The Sweeps never export sand out of Mari, and actively work to keep it exclusive.   The Sweeps got their name from the two sided tool they carry with them that is both a rake and a broom. You might see them raking the sand clean on the beach or off the beach sweeping up windswept grains. Sand Sweeps have also been known to use their tool as a weapon to forcefully dissuade sand poachers.
