Ranie

(RAY-nee) A herbaceous, flowering perennial with heart shaped leaves with white undersides covered in dense, small hairs. It is a fiber crop used for fabric production; the Nemeli people have cultivated the rain loving plant for this very purpose.   Ranie can be harvested 3-4 times a year, just as it begins to flower. The Nemeli immediately remove the outer, woody bark to access the fibrous inner bark. The inner bark is dried and de-gummed to extract the spinnable fiber. It is one of the strongest known fibers, and the Nemeli value that it exhibits even greater strength when wet. Ranie is quick to dry and especially known for its ability to hold its shape; while not terribly elastic, it is quite resilient.   In addition to fabric, the Nemeli people also use Ranie to make fishing nets and bookbinding ribbon.
