Erhia

One world of many, neither the youngest nor the oldest available in this one particular universe, yet Erhia is that which holds the most consequence of any of them. The events of "Pillars of Faith" primarily take place on this planet.

Geography

The surface of Erhia consists of over 80% ocean, with the remaining <20% being collected into one of two continental landmasses. There are virtually no islands above sea level, and nothing resembling polar ice caps. Temperatures are consistently high regardless of season, and humidity nearly omnipresent. A great deal of land is covered with either temperate or tropical forest, with no genuine tundra or desert to speak of. The closest examples of those terrains are both rife with abnormal - by Earth standards - plants and animals, and the climate is hard to draw exact comparisons to.   The two continents of this world are Taikos in the northwest and Taimont in the southeast. Taikos is generally oblong in shape, stretching northwards and bending in towards its sibling in the east, while Taimont is more akin to a mini-supercontinent that holds much more land than the other. However, much of this land is rendered uninhabitable by humans due to equatorial heat.

Fauna & Flora

Plants are the most abundant form of life on Erhia. Everything from trees to fungi to grasses to herbs finds plenty of room to grow and thrive, with variations depending on the exact location. Several species of tree-sized fungal growths are known to exist, and are native primarily to Taimont; Taikos favors grasses and trees as its dominant form of flora, with mushrooms and lichen relegated to more typical sizes. In the northernmost lands on the planet, forests become thicker to the point that they become practically impassible, while moving further south runs the risk of encountering specialized heat-adapted fungi that have pushed out all other life, even animals.   The largest forms of animal life that exist on Erhia are located in the oceans, which teem with a fantastical assortment of strange and exotic specimens. Whale-like mammals and giant cephalopods do battle whilst preying on various aquatic species, who themselves feed on algae and bottom-dwelling pseudo-plants. More than one myth has been spawned as a result of a weary sailor catching a glimpse of one such titanic sea-creature near the surface.   In terms of land-based life, Erhia is relatively lacking. Plants are highly dominant in most terrains, and large predators are considered legendary in scarcity. Humans are one of the largest creatures adapted to life on land, although amphibians, birds, and smaller reptiles have found great success as well. Such species are heavily divorced from recognizable Earth specimens, however, as the utter lack of insect life makes for a stark contrast in the ecosystem. Herbivores and omnivores are the only practical choices on land, in essence, although the largest species of birds are quite capable of hunting their weaker reptilian cousins as a primary food source.

Natural Resources

As a result of the heavily forested nature of Erhia's landmasses, wood is perhaps the most plentiful resource on the planet, a fact which is only reinforced by the trees' heavily accelerated growing speeds. However, any resource which is fundamentally either dependent on a plant, or a plant itself, is going to be quite common if you're in the right place. Various kinds of grains, or really anything else humans might cultivate and grow for their own consumption, are far more abundant than farming allows for on Earth, as Erhia's relatively mild seasonal shifts and specialized plant-life allow for planting and harvesting year-round. The only restriction is that failing to harvest such plants regularly can cause issues, depending on the species. For instance, due to generations of selective breeding, the wheat that Belenon and its surrounding cities are accustomed to growing will cease being edible if not harvested at the proper times, and will require destroying and replanting the crops entirely.   Mineral wealth is readily accessible in more mountainous regions of the planet, as ore veins are plentiful and are either directly exposed to the surface or begin shortly beneath it. With alchemy making extensive use of various metals for the craft's practices, mining is an important and - in regions with feudalistic or capitalistic economic systems - lucrative venture. Stone itself is also unusually prized by certain civilizations, specifically ones that favor alchemically-enhanced stone as a building material over wood for whatever reason.
"...and so she bade her brother cast himself into his own torch, while she curled in on herself in the radiance of that newly sparked sun. Thus ended the metamorphosis of Erhia, daughter of Qomu."   -excerpt from Belenese mythology

Cool article! The planet seems small in land, yet very varied in species. I liked specially about the wheat which need to be harvested at the right time.   Good work :)
