Ocean Master

Ipusma puts on several Ocean master competitions a year for boat makers and sailers to see who is the "Ocean Master". The competition is an impromptu heavy storm distance competition on the sea. about 400 years ago a local mage enchanted a buoy and a hand full of sextons for competitors. The buoy was enchanted to move further and further out into the water after a ship with a sexton passed it. The sexton itself was enchanted in a way that if it passed the buoy it would turn to an icy blue to indicate it had moved past the body and have a memory of the exact location of the boy and communicate it to the other sextons. If an individual moved past the current leader's location the sexton would fade back to its original steel color and the other sexton would turn the color. This deters cheating as cheating has been a problem in the past.

Appointment

The appointment of an Ocean Master is dependent on the breaking of a previous distance record from the docks of Ipusma.

History

in the 5th Century BWH, there were two men Servil Gren and Regenold Wasser. They came together to make the first deepwater boats but each man had his own ideas of how a boat should be constructed. Fierce competition between the two was born to see who could make the best boat for besting the seas. this competition became known as the Ocean Master Competition and is held on days that are heavily stormy.
Many people have died competing for the title of Ocean Master as new and innovative ways of building boats have been born over the years. But the innovation that has been born of this competition has led to being able to have reliable inland trade routes for resources all over Asmatum. however many believe that being able to travel past the horizon is a fools errand as what is past the horizon is a unknown.

Excellent! I'm not sure how boat innovation has led to reliable inland trade routes, though.

mostly that within a half a mile of the shore boats can function quite well and make more direct routes to harbor towns. It's a term I picked up while working on a cruise ship maybe I re-explain it to make it more understandable?

Yeah, I would add a little more to explain the causal affect.
