Average Valorian House

Eva Valoria is a city of many people, many cultures meeting together under Imperial law, but most of the buildings follow the same general form of architecture. While many of the houses are variable in exact shape, their general form is simple and similar to each other within the same social class. For this discussion, the topic is an "average" house, the sort which makes up the bulk of the city and is generally used by lower classes who don't need to rely on communal sleeping houses.

Purpose / Function

Primarily these two-story buildings are made purely as a dwelling, able to hold one family (two parents and up to three children). The lower story holds a fireplace and earthen stove built into one wall, and thus often is used for a kitchen and meal area. The upper story is usually a sleeping area in the summer months, or a storage area in the winter months.

Architecture

The type of house being discussed is often found as a two-story building, with a peaked roof of fired clay tiles. Windows are usually small, with shutters which may be opened to air out the home as needed. Valorian buildings primarily use sandstone as a foundation, and for major parts of structural support such as the corner pillars and any internal vertical supports. The walls are usually a type of wattle and daub, using any broken pieces of the sandstone reduced into sand for the daub mixture. There are usually two layers of daub applied before whitewashing is applied on either side. The ground of the lower story is stone, usually with some area rugs laid out. A fireplace is built into the rear wall, and smoke is carried up a channel through the upper level before being channeled sideways out to the rear of the building. The upper story has a floor of hardwood timbers, and is sometimes divided into two chambers with an interior wall.
