Dremon Bryrel
Dr. Dremon Bryrel was one of the founding members of the City State Ionin, as well as the first democratically elected Head Researcher of the Ivorburn Research Institute. Post-Collapse, he has become a controversial figure in the retrospectives of scholars and historians that attempt to uncover and understand the truths behind the incident.
Dr. Bryrel is an Elven scientist, credited primarily for being the main driving force behind the growth of Arcane technologies in society, being involved in multiple key projects to integrate the arts in transportation, automated machinery, and more. Much of his later work in life remains undisclosed, as it was primarily to the benefit of the Ioinion institutions that he had founded, and were a topic of national secrecy as a result.
Early Life
Dremon Bryrel was born in Heartfire in 643, the son of distinguished researcher Kymel and Aila Bryrel. Dremond excelled in multiple subjects adjacent to Machinery and Engineering, earning him a Scholarship at the University of Afsserin, the capital of Urushee. He was the eldest of three siblings having two sisters born after him. He would marry at the age of 23 to Margeret Meyers, a human track athlete, and remained in this marriage until her passing in 712. They had no children. Working in Urushee, he would befriend then-leader Bellas Grefina when he was 27 during a routine inspection of Urusheen research grants, which would eventually lead to their partnership in starting the Nation State of Ionin. While in university, his primary thesis was on the usage of Arcana in emergent machine technology, and the potentials they could have in developing society.Career in Urushee
After graduating with distinguishment from Afsserin, with several key accolades, that contributed to Bryrel receiving council-funded contracts that allowed him to continue the work he had begun with his thesis. While his ideas were typically treated with reverence by fellow researchers, with his work being published in scientific journals regularly, colleagues reportedly found him difficult to work with. From memoirs of an individual that worked with him at the time, he was described as "a brilliant mind that had difficulty conveying his thoughts in grounded terms, working with a full picture the others didn't have". As such, even with the apparent great strides that were made in his early years, it would be several decades before Bryrel would be able to put his fledgling technology to a grander use. In 694, Bryrel, having recently earned his doctorate, would revolutionize production industries across the world by implementing the usage of Magic, Automata and Arcana into Machinery, creating elaborate mechanical systems that were capable of completing factory-level tasks with far greater efficiency than what had existed previously. Field trials found Dr. Bryrel's designs to require far less oversight due to a reduction in points of failure throughout, and the designs would be put to use in Urusheen industrial work almost immediately, with other nations soon following suit when the research was publicly released. In 703, Bryrel would begin collaborating with several other professionals from different nations that had previously been working on prototypes for advanced forms of vehicular transport. Until then, most transportation was still carriage-based, or required the use of powerful magi to transport groups or objects across large distances quickly. The proposals were to make large, multi-person machines designed purely for efficient transportation across large or small distances, and while the majority of work had been completed by that point, they found the operations to be inefficient, and requested Dr. Bryrel to assist them with the usage of his designs. In 715, Dr. Bryrel would further his research into empowering machine objects with Arcana energy to create long distance communication devices, that would enable individuals to speak with other persons without the need for active spellcasting or the services of other magi. This invention, in particular, would be the breaking point for a wide range of criticism against the doctor's works in 720, with claims that while his creations were convenient, they were taking away from the work of professional magi, and he would routinely face similar accusations over the next decade.Founding of Ionin
In 719, Dr. Bryrel, having experienced success in previous projects collaborating with like-minded individuals, made the proposal to Bellas Grafina about creating a remote, dedicated independant Research Facility to further progress into the development of Arcana technologies. Work on what would become the Ivorburn Research Institute began soon after, and the scope of the project would soon rapidly change as the shortlist was drawn together of individuals Dr. Bryrel recommended to be recruited, leading to the facility to become large enough that a dedicated sister facility was required in order to house the functioning maintenance staff. In time, this would continue to expand farther, leading to the full establishment of Ionin as a Nation State, eventually detatching from Urushee. While Dr. Bryrel expressed no desire for a leadership role in the newly formed Ionin, he was chosen in a landslide election victory by his peers to be the Head Researcher for the Ivorburn Reserach Institute, a role he would maintain until retirement. Due to the national secrecy involved in many of the projects Ionin performed, the extent of his involvement in the active operations and future planning for work in Ionin remains unknown, but it is generally believed his earlier work held much influence upon it.Retirement, Death and Legacy
Dr. Dremon Bryrel would retire from his position on the 14th of Trint, 751, endorsing Richard Harths as his successor, who would lose the subsequent election to Vuduin Quilynn. He would pass of natural causes in Kar-22, 763. While he left no surviving family members, he was cared for and frequently visited in his final months by the colleagues he had befriended throughout his lengthy career, with a national memorial held in Urushee the next day in honor of his legacy. Before The Collapse, the 22nd of Kar was marked every year in Urushee as a national day of remembrance, with a tradition upheld that a replica of the first Vehicle prototype designed by the Doctor and his colleagues would be driven from the capital of Urushee to the gates of the Ivorburn Research Institute. While Dr. Dremon Bryrel remained a controversial figure among the ranks of Magi and Arcane practicioners, he is remembered as a pioneer in the field of both Arcana and Technology, with his breakthrough inventions revolutionizing how society would operate and develop in the coming years. However, there is much argument to be made that this progress is also what ultimately caused the worst extents of The Collapse in 874 - Scholars such as Dr. Hatthroe would speculate the claim that "Were it not for society's increasing adoption and fascination of Arcana in machine technology, the advent of the Collapse may not have proven as crippling to civilisations that had already been brought to its knees by the aftermath. It cannot be denied that Dr. Bryrel's technologies ultimately led to destruction on an unimaginable level, and that may prove to be his new legacy." The majority of technologies that operated with Bryrel's Arcane Machina would remain non-functional after the Collapse. However, efforts by scavengers and salvagers have restored operational ability to select models in the centuries following the incident, operating off of electrical energy sources that can restore their original purposes, albeit at a much more limited efficiency.
