Emperor Charles Estiefort

Emperor Charles Estiefort was the 8th Supreme Emperor of Enphune. He rose to the throne following his father's assassination in 865 at the age of 19, and abdicated in 875 with the fall of the Empire when he fled the country. His whereabouts later in life, and ultimate fate are unknown.

Early Life

Charles Estiefort was born on Kar-07, 846, to then-Emperor Manfred and his wife Sarlene Estiefort. In his early years, Charles was subject to frequent Media attention due to the popularity of the family among the Enphunian populace, though little of actual importance was chronicled during this time.   By most accounts, Charles was a regular child of the throne, possessing no particular strengths in education nor physical activities. Upon entering higher education in 862, Charles reportedly pursued philosophical topics of study, among his practices for assuming the role of Emperor once his father passed. He would graduate from Orikront University with an Honored In Excellence Certificate in 864 - The highest commendation available.

Ascension to Throne

Charles Estiefort was abruptly ascended to the throne following the Assassination of Manfred and Sarlene Estiefort in 865. There was much suspicion as to the proceedings of the events, with the exact whereabouts of Charles being unconfirmed, but enquiries into the matter were quickly silenced by the Royal Institution.   The most common prevailing theory regarding Charles Estiefort is that the assassinations were carried out upon his order in a power grab to seize the throne for himself, but it is unlikely we will ever know the truth.   While the public were wary of the circumstances of the Ascension initially, the newly crowned Emperor initially made no radical changes to the society of Enphune, despite his differing beliefs to previous monarchs. Instead, a series of popular and well-received articles in favour of the people were made under his rule, such as reducing the rate of taxation, and wide spread improvements to public transportation.

As Ruler

Charles Estiefort was most commonly described as a Utilitarian, Efficient Emperor. Focusing on what he would refer to as "The good of Enphune", eventually enacting sweeping reforms to the societal structures of the nation and promoting the usage of Arcane technologies throughout major settlements. While there were prominent outspoken critics of these moves, the general public would view these acts favourably, granting Estiefort the momentum to mold Enphune in a different direction than his predecessors' beliefs.   Opposition to Charles Estiefort reached a fevered pitch in the Ith of 873, where a coalition of Oligarch-backed mining unions and aristocrats staged a violent protest against the automation of Enphunian Quarrying operations with the use of Arcane technology, where several major factories were disrupted and damaged as protestors stormed the buildings. In response, Charles Estiefort rallied the Enphunian Elite, the nation's army, and proceeded to quell the riots in a massacre referred to as "Bloody Diamond Friday". The extreme display of force was heavily condemned by other nations, with Archmage Theodore XI denouncing the event as a "disgusting tolitarian exertion of power upon its own citizens".   While much civil unrest occurred over the following weeks of the incident, no further military intervention was carried out, while the protesting groups would dismantle from within over time.

The Collapse

Immediately following The Collapse on Rort-18, 874, multiple major Enphunian centres were irreparably damaged from the spontaneous failures of their Arcane technologies, while other parts of the Empire fell to banditry, panic and looting in the hours following the event.   Despite multiple public appearances, and attempts to mobilize the Enphunian Elite to restore order, the radical reforms the Emperor had enacted left enough of a significant resistance to his rule that internal attempts at coups and mutiny within the military body were agitated shortly after their movements were made. While it is suspected that these were instigated by similar opposing Oligarchs to those that initiated the Bloody Diamond Friday riots, the nation soon collapsed from internal warring and strife of those vying to usurp Charles Estiefort as Emperor.   Shortly at the start of Een 875, Emperor Charles Estiefort fled the nation with his personal guard, never to be heard from again. His ultimate fate and whereabouts remain unknown.
