Haguelun Halmet
Haguelun (Hag-ue-lun) is a hamlet in Urushee's Fleurs Forest. It lies 1.2km west of the Mauthune Mountain Pass, and holds the status of being the formal residence for the family of Strigiformes Arcana that maintain this Chronicle. It maintains a steady relationship with Humanoid species traders that pass through Mauthune due to its ease of access, with the village specialising in Horticultural medicine exports.
History
Founded upon the site of what is believed to be an attempt of a previous tribal settlement, Haguelun was established in 1123 by a Lupus Arcana {Minor} by the name of Roningale. The original intention was to create a home suitable for caring for his family, having recently performed an exodus from the nearby village of Poifort. In Sur of 1124, Roningale would come to the aid of an injured Ursus Arcana {Minor} named Mooks, who had been shot by Dwarven hunters some 5 kilometers North, mistaking him for the common brown bears that resided in Fleurs. While they were unable to tend to his wounds due to their limited dexterity, the Lupus were able to nurse him back to health. Owing a debt to the family, Mooks would relocate to an extension outside of their home and assist with warding off individuals from Poifort that would seek to disrupt the homestead, growing a reputation of the simple group becoming a safe haven for individuals that were uncomfortable with the village's dominance over the surrounding region. By 1128, several other homes had been constructed, and 17 individuals now lived in Haguelun. By 1134, this had more than doubled to 37. By 1136, the hamlet was beginning to face significant pressure from Poifort due to its steady increase in size, and a decision was made by Roningale's successor Leoka to establish a business relationship with other species in order to dissuade interference. Entrusting the initial author of this Chronicle, Vrus, with a collection of the Hamlet's herbs from its latest harvest, they flew over the Mauthune pass and attempted to garner the attention of passing merchants. This was particularly notable for its time, as while it had been over a Century since the Hummingbird retaliations, there was still a lingering sense of distrust among Arcana Species towards civilizations beyond the Forest. While most of the herbs offered were not of particular value to a duo of Elven traders, they expressed interest in the leaves of the Abbintain plant, which was not readily available to their supply chain. Establishing a successful business contact, Haguelun quickly began to exploit the venture, growing and trading rare herbs for materials with humanoid civilizations, improving upon the foundations and structures of the Hamlet to defend itself better from potential threats. It was at this time they also began to acquire advanced tools to assist with their operations, and several individuals were taught communication skills such as reading and writing - Vrus, in particular, would use this opportunity to learn more of the world beyond Fleurs, and undertake the project to educate those around him of Erra, initiating a Chronicle project that became his primary focus and legacy.Demographics
Haguelun's population comprises almost entirely of Arcana {Minor} subspecies, with 3 Major variants also residing within the Hamlet. Most populus are Lupus, Canidae, Strigiformes and Ursidae Arcana {Minor}, who make up nearly two thirds of the residents. For a brief time in 1171, an Elf resided at Haguelun, and the Hamlet has hosted travelers of the area on occasion. The average age for Haguelun is slightly older than most settlements in Fleurs. While it typically has a normal birth rate, it is common for individuals to leave the Hamlet upon reaching adult age, searching out locations they have learned of from this Chronicle.Geography & Structure
At 1.2km west of the Mauthune mountain pass, Haguelun is situated close to the Glass Rivere, passing just outside the western perimeter of the hamlet. The settlement is both grounded and exists among the trees; A select few homes were constructed amidst the treetops for the Avian Arcana, as it provided ease of access to them, while the majority of homes remain either on the ground floor, or are elevated above the others in order to conserve space. The Hamlet is surrounded by a 7m high wooden border, constructed from logs, with a single gateway to the North of the hamlet. There are observation posts located in the trees and along the perimeter of the walls, standing 4m high, with a Crow's Nest structure that pierces the Canopy of the forest. The Crow's Nest is typically occupied by an Avian member of the community, whereas the treeline posts, as well as Avian residences, are accessed by a series of bridges and platforms that extend along the interior border walls.Governance
Decisions that affect the larger hamlet society are chosen by a village Elder, who is elected when the previous leader passes away, resigns and names a successor, or is removed from their role by a vote. If a successor is not named before the Elder dies, an election is held in two stages, with the first being a Nomination round of individuals selected by others within the settlement. To this day, it has not been necessary to remove an Elder by vote - The procedure for such an occurrence requires a vote with at least 75% of the population voting in favour of the motion.Economy
Following the establishment of trade routes in 1136, Haguelun has begun operating with a barter economy. The value of goods are generally determined by both parties involved in the trade, though they are expected to operate in good faith regarding the matter. Disagreements with the value of goods that cannot be resolved are brought before the Elder. This bartering extends to their trade partners outside of the hamlet, typically trading their herbal harvests for valuable commodities and materials that aid the settlement, but individuals are allowed to exchange their goods for available amenities if desired. In 1175, there was a minor incident when Busceon, a Lupus Arcana {Minor}, returned from their coming of age journey, having visited the homeland of the merchants that exchanged goods with the hamlet, and learned that Haguelun's Abbintain leaves were being valued significantly higher in Elven societies than what they were being treated as in these exchanges. These actions led to Haguelun being treated more favourably in future business, and Busceon was elected to a new role of Treasurer of the hamlet. While they typically do not store much in the way of currency, he oversees all trade deals with outside individuals, and guides the allocation of hamlet resources.Remove these ads.
