Kobolds

Kobolds are a short, stubby race of scaled bipedal lizards. They have a passing resemblance to Draconis, but typically have the height of a Dwarf.   Before The Collapse, they were most widely known for being a subservient race to Dragons, displaying fierce loyalty and reverence for the creatures, and would establish their homes and warrens either close to, or within, their lairs. However, they were later discovered to have created elaborate societies of their own far independent of other creatures and species over time, keeping an isolationist perspective on the world around them.

Biology

At most, Kobolds come to the size of a Dwarf, with large heads similar to that of Draconis and Dragon individuals. Indeed, much of their biology is shared with Draconis, having scales and large tails, but their diminutive size and shorter, nimbler claws are the most distinct visual differences. They also tend to be far more agile, making up for their lack of strength.   They typically have much shorter lifespans than that of regular races, living to the age of 40, and mature within 3 years of hatching. Kobold families tend to be quite large as a result of this, possibly an evolutionary adaptation due to the inherent fragility of the species.

Intelligence

Prior to The Collapse, Kobolds were typically denoted as unintelligent creatures that required the presence of an overlord figure in their society. It is unclear where exactly this misinformation originally propagated from, other than perhaps to propagandize their relationship with Dragons that the nations of Erra had shared a contentious relationship with in the past.   In reality, Kobolds possess average intelligence compared to other races, with an inherent cunning skills in trickery and outwitting potential threats, which usually manifested in the creation of deadly traps to protect warrens and lairs. It is more than likely that these skills, combined with the luxury of a fearsome physical threat to protect their homes, is what lead to the symbiotic relationship that Kobolds and Dragons shared in a pre-Collapse world.

Post-Collapse Habitats

With the abrupt disappearance of the Dragons following The Collapse, the Kobold species now faced the issue of their lairs no longer being secure. Potentially at the mercy of physical threats and invasions their Draconic benefactors would previously have been able to ward off, and in disarray due to the lack of proper leadership, many of these lairs would quickly become abandoned or fall into disrepair, their inhabitants leaving to seek out safer pastures. Some of these lairs would instead be converted into Kobold warrens, while some would rejoin with those controlled by their brethren. In the cases of smaller, less influential Draconic figures whose Kobold population would not be able to sustain themselves in such a manner, they would also potentially join tribal societies formed by other Monster races.   While there was initial hesitation, as with many races that previously chose to stay in the wilds, Kobolds were able to integrate into larger Humanoid societies with relative ease, both due to their relatively benign natures, as well as it not being entirely unheard of for Kobolds to depart their kin and live among other dominant Erra races. They typically enjoy comfortable roles in larger settlements, and have shown a unique disposition to roles as security experts due to their in-depth knowledge of building fortifications and defenses against a wide manner of threats.
