The Red Broker
The Red Broker
The Red Broker is an enigma. Despite my best efforts to understand his nature, or identity, I have come short time and time again to procure any significant details as to the man behind this persona.
What is known is that this person, possibly Human, is an information broker with a reputation for frighteningly accurate details on a vast range of topics - Even ones that would seem vastly out of his field. Individuals of large influence across North Urushee know of him, but not whom he is, and legends run rampant as to tales of the man behind the myth. Some claim he is potentially hundreds of years old, having first started to appear in record some decades after The Collapse occurred, though evidence to support this is lacking other than vague entries in passing journals.
The cost of his services match the value of the information being exchanged. He has been known to accept coin or valuable possessions as fair trade, but there are also rumors that some questions demand far grimmer prices from the Broker. One such legend involves the Elven gunslinger Caleb Qinzumin who, for information on how to exploit weaknesses in the patrol routes & defenses of a criminal gang responsible for the death of his daughter, gave his non-dominant arm as tribute.
I myself have been able to encounter The Red Broker precisely one time, when I was searching for the whereabouts of a Spectralis settlement in the southern parts of North Urushee. It had evaded my discovery for some time despite reliable information from a close source, leaving me ready to abandon my search until a chance encounter with the man occurred at a public rest stop.
He operated out of a small wooden, horse-drawn carriage, much like travelling merchants from Erra's distant past. It had a set of opening windows on the side from which he peered out to potential customers, and whilst it was too dark for me to make out many details inside of the caravan, peculiar decorations and superstitious effigies caught my eyes. He wore a sharp red suit, as fitting to his title, and solid black sunglasses that served to hide his eyes from me. The Broker was exceptionally perceptive, with his head tracking me no matter where I stood when I looked at him - Even once I had left and returned to attempt to spy on the curious man. Any attempts I made to question him about his identity were either met with silent indifference, or him questioning if that was the information I wished to deal for. Eventually I gave in and negotiated an exchange with him for the settlement's whereabouts.
The Red Broker is a remarkably straightforward professional despite his reputation for mystique, making the terms of our arrangement and the information I would receive from him remarkably clear. Once we had both agreed upon the price and I had paid my dues, he quickly began transcribing exact directions from the rest stop, including compass directions, that led me to my destination within a matter of hours. When I had finished my research and returned to the rest stop, his carriage was gone, and I have not met him since. My instincts tell me that despite his affable personality, he is potentially a very dangerous individual under the wrong circumstances, and I advise caution to the reader if they are to wish for his services.
"Are you sure? There is no turning back."
