Consul

The two Consuls are the foremost political powers of the Ramuan Republic. They are elected for one two year term after which they must remove themselves from politics for a ten year period before running again. the terms are staggered so that every year there is a veteran Prime Consul and a newly elected Second Consul which will be the Prime Consul in the following year.   The Prime Consul, unlike the Second Consul, has the responsibility to oversee the proceedings of the Senate when it is in session, to ensure that its members act with the decorum required of their station and to carry out whatever policies are passed. Furthermore, The Prime Consul is the commander of the Vigilants, the combination Fire brigade and city watch for the City of Ramua, as well as the commander in chief of all Republican Military forces.   The Second Consul is tasked with overseeing the religious responsibilities of the State, performing the numerous rituals required by the government, calculating the number of extra-calendar days required at the end of the year, and learning how to command executive power in the Republic. Furthermore, the Second Consul is charged with command of the 1st Legion, usually the only standing army force permitted to be stationed in the capital.

Requirements

Citizen of Ramua and Member of the Senate

Appointment

Elected by the citizens of the Republic and confirmed by the Senate

Accoutrements & Equipment

The Consuls wear Toga's of pure white edged with gold and silver. They alone of all the members of the Senate are permitted to wear colored tunics under their togas while in session as opposed to the the white or brown worn by the senators. In addition, while in public they must wear a crown of gold or silver olive leaves marking their station as the Prime or Secondary consul respectively.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

Traditionally no consul has ever been removed from the position except by retirement at the end of their term or being killed in battle. In the rare instance of the consul being charged and found guilty of a crime for which they would have to be removed from office they are usually confined to their homes and a replacement is selected with the title of "Consul of the Court", then when the consul has officially left office any punishment will be carried out. Should a sitting consul commit a crime for which the punishment is death, the citizens of the city will hold a mock civil war where the city guard will split into two "factions" with the Senate and the offending consul on opposing sides, march to the fields near the city, hold a mock battle where the side planed to lose is commanded by the offending consul who is then slain in combat. This has only happened twice in the history of the city as a means of preserving the dignity of the posotion.
