State Mage
"The noblest profession is one in which you give your life to your nation" - Lord Huccingtoe
The ultimate form of self sacrifice for patriotism is seen in the profession of the State Mage, magi who willingly shorten their lives in service to their country. These mages are active both in war and in peace, wandering their sworn nation in its service.
In war they act as living siege engines, throwing bolts of magical energy into the fray and knocking down walls and people alike. In return for their selfless service, they are offered a grand stipend and the assurance of a fine caretaking as they descend into being threadbare. In peace they are emissaries, bringing rains for the harvest, investigating rogues and bandits and mediating disputes.
