Harith

Harith is the major city in the city state with the same name.    Due to its location on the coast and the largely wooded nature of the region, the city was founded and developed on two main industries - fishing and timber. Over the years, a highly flourishing carpentry industry has grown from the ready supply of timber and trade routes. Harithic woodwork is considered some of the finest in the world, both in terms of skill and durability, and items are exported to all corners of the world.

Harithic Carpentry

The real secret behind the success of Harith's carpenters isn't the raw material alone, but the extensive apprentice system that emerged in the early days of the city and has since grown into a formalized, extensive training system designed to produce the best woodworkers in the world.    Harithic carpenters begin their apprenticeship at the age of 8, when they leave their family home to live and train under a master carpenter. Only carpenters who are considered grand masters, having reached a certain level of skill and renown, may train these fledgling apprentices. Families commonly pay for the food and board of their children for the first years of the apprenticeship, and for the most sought-after masters the price can be quite steep. The training is very thorough and covers all aspects of the craft, from raw materials and tool maintenance to design, as well as the practical skills of carpentry. After the first four years of training, provided their skills are sufficiently honed, the apprentices no longer need to pay for their upkeep and instead earn it by assisting the master and any of his employees in the workshop as well as cleaning and doing other domestic tasks.    At the age of about 20 or 22, apprentices graduate from their basic training and are free to seek employment under a master or, if they are very promising, grand master carpenter. While these junior masters earn a salary and have a basic level of independence during this employment, it is still at its basis a further stage of training and they are dependent on the approval of their master to become a full-fledged master themselves, which usually happens around the age of 30. It is not uncommon for master carpenters, once their training is finished, to find employment as the private artisans of a noble or merchant, whether locally or abroad.   It is this meticulous training system that allows Harith to maintain its position as the leading source for fine carpentry in Erziyye.
