Devil Trees

Appearance

Devil Trees have a thick, rough, straight trunk of dark, almost black wood and a spreading crown of dark green leaves. Their roots are thick and partially protrude from the ground. In spring, its flowers turn pink to dark red, giving the tree an eerie appearance. In the fall, a few, oval, dark purple fruits no larger than 5 cm can be harvested, which have a hard fruit core on the inside.

Habitat

The trees grow in shady, not too warm areas. As they do not need much light, they even grow in caves illuminated by light crystals; all that is required is enough water and magio. A kind of magical synthesis takes place through the magio, which the trees use to compensate for a lack of nutrients.

Usage

Devil Trees absorb the magio of their surroundings and store it in their trunk for emergencies. This means they can even withstand light fires. Some of the collected magio collects in the fruits, which is why they are popular with mages as they replenish their magical reserves.
Harvesting the fruit is not easy, however, as the tree has a kind of consciousness and can therefore sense the intentions of approaching beings. If someone with bad intentions approaches it, a Devil Tree defends itself with its roots. It lashes out with its roots or wraps itself around its victims and crushes them. This makes it almost impossible to fell a Devil Tree.
If someone with good or no intentions approaches it, it remains calm and lets them pick its fruit.
It is still unknown how the Devil Trees recognize intentions and how far their consciousness reaches. Some mages claim that it is only enough for defense, others are convinced that Devil Trees are independent thinking beings. They back up their claims with legends in which the trees have shared their magio with mages or even protected them.

Usage

The devil fruits are mainly dried and serve as emergency provisions for mages on strenuous missions. In the few areas where there are many devil trees, dried or fresh fruit is distributed to injured mages to help them heal.
