Devil´s snare

Appearance

Devil's snare has a dark green chalice that sits on several strong roots. The chalice opening is in the middle of a colorful flower and long, tentacle-like leaves emerge from beneath the flower, which secrete a paralyzing sticky secretion.

Habitat

Devil's snares prefer shady areas and the vicinity of trees. As they are feared by humans, devil's snares can only be found in dense forests. They have been eradicated from forest edges and other places.

Characteristics

When the flower is on the hunt, it spreads its long leaves flat on the ground and as soon as an animal steps on them, the tip of the leaf quickly curls up. The adhesive secretion prevents escape until the paralyzing poison takes effect. In the case of larger animals, more leaves wrap around the prey, reinforcing the paralyzing poison. This can lead to the death of the prey. As soon as the prey is paralyzed, the leaves slowly withdraw and transport it into the calyx, where it is decomposed.
Devil's snares can also be dangerous to humans. If it wraps around a leg, the leg becomes paralyzed and the affected person must act immediately and cut off the leaf with a sharp object. Only then can an attempt be made to remove the leaf from the leg. If an item of clothing is affected, the only thing that can help is to throw it away. In the case of direct skin contact, the help of a healer is required, as the secretion cannot even be removed with water.
If action is not taken quickly enough and several leaves come into contact with the skin, the paralysis affects the entire body and a second person is needed to rescue the victim. However, there is only one known case of a person being killed by a devil's snare. The man concerned was so careless that he lay down to sleep next to a giant devil's snare. During the night, almost his entire body was wrapped in the leaves and the poison had a fatal effect.
According to legend, devil's snares can even move slowly by using their roots to crawl and thus find a better place to hunt.
