Stopping By Woods

Stopping by Woods

BY CORDITES TUN

Whose woods these are I do know.
Her home is not only in the shadows though;
She will see me stopping paying no tolls,
To watch her woods fill up with souls.

My little dog does think it odd
To stop where the living do not trod,
The woods is darkened by each tear
This the longest evening of the year.

He gives a huff and does make his collar shake
To ask if we're there by some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and shuffling of the dead's feet.

The woods are so deep and so dark,
So I move on, not through the arc.
For my sister, I've no more promises to keep,
It will be years beyond before I have restful sleep.

Never will I rest in peaceful slumber.
For I still feel the might and thunder
Of the battles fraught with dying souls,
These dark woods they stepped to pay their tolls.
