Ironheim
Once no more than a minor trading outpost within a vast underground empire, Ironheim is now the last refuge for the Drakendar people.
Located at the Northern reach of the Drakenbergen range, Ironheim is the only above ground Drakendar settlement. The city is home to the majority of what remains of the Drakendar people, the rest of who me are scattered across the continent.
Despite being a fulcrum for trade between the Drakendar and it’s neighboring city-states, Ironheim lacks a seaport or safe overland highway. Those wishing to transport goods to or from Ironheim by sea do so via the nearest port at Ancora, roughly a day’s travel West of Ironheim. Overland caravans and travelers traverse several small and treacherous routes through the mountains and forests to the South and East.
Ironheim is governed by a council of stewards, each charged with governing a critical piece of the Drakendar economy. Before the underground empire’s collapse, each Dwarven city was ruled by a similar council, all collectively governed by their King. Rumors abound that the prince, heir to the mountain throne and supposed King of the Drakendar lives in exile in the city.
Despite having only one above ground settlement, the Drakendar empire counts many settlements in the Northern region as it’s vassals. These settlements are largely non-dwarven and self-governing, but have historically followed Drakendar law and paid liege and tithe to the undermountain King.
Ironheim has changed dramatically over the past half-century, transforming from a utilitarian trading outpost to a densely-populated urban environment complete where society, industry, and piety compete for the attention of the Drakendar who call the city home.
