Talc Desert

The Talc Desert is a major expanse of arid land covering the southeastern part of Allethra.

Geography

The Talc desert is separated into two distinct regions. The northeastern region is a rocky desert, with flat, cracked ground. The southwestern portion is rolling sand, with large dunes. The desert is bordered on the west by the Reshdul Mountains, and on its southern tip by the volcano Srolgistnir.   Its southeastern coast is the only place in the world where hallis grows.

History

The area now covered by the Talc Desert was once dry but rich, arable land controlled by ancient Barisea. In 913 BE, the volcano Srolgistnir violently erupted after an ancient Pliscian Working was discovered there. Large plumes of ash swept northwards across the region. Latent magical energy within the ash prevented the already scarce rains from falling on the plains, and slowly the region began to transform into a desert. Western winds from the Reshdul Mountains brought eroded rock and sand, covering a large portion of the region.   Though there are few permanent inhabitants, large caravans traverse the dangers of the desert to harvest the spines of the hallis plant, used to create hallis dust.
