Languages

The world of Esterwynne is filled with a wide variety of languages and a few that come from elsewhere. When making a character, your species will list off 1 or 2 automatic languages and then your intelligence modifier allows you to select a few more. Your species will have a list of bonus languages to pick from and the sparks you might have will widen that list even more. What follows is the complete list of languages.

Base Languages

Common

The various kingdoms have their own rendition of common that is similar enough to common that you can understand it if you know basic common, but if you only know a kingdom language, another kingdom's language will be difficult for you to understand.
  • Basic Common
  • Cardonish (Cardon)
  • Fishitain (Fishita)
  • Nagish (Nagihim)
  • Rodan (Radina)
  • Gisht (Gypsie)
  • Wroven (Wrovemore)
  • Handish (Handred)
  • Denish (Holden)
There is one other common language, but it stands apart from the other commons. It is the common language of the underground dwellers.
  • Undercommon

Dwarven

The dwarven language has been around for as long as dwarves can remember, to the point that dwarves on opposite sides of the world have no difference in speech. The language on a whole has changed and so the language is split, because knowing how to speak with a dwarf now is very different from speaking to one thousands of years ago.
  • Dwarven (current)
  • Deep Dwarven
  • Ancient Dwarven

Elvish

Like the dwarves, the elves have had their language passed down through the ages and the various subspecies all speak the same, though the wild elves have developed something that is a cross between elvish and sylvan, there isn't any known written version of their language.
  • Elvish (current)
  • Deep Elven
  • Ancient Elvish
  • Wildish (wild elf)

Gnomish

Gnomes speak at a pace that is faster than most can understand and few know if there is a difference between the subspecies' language.
  • Gnomish
  • Deep Gnomish

Halfling

The halfling language is something that some would call a cross between basic common and elvish.
  • Halfling

Orcish

Most orc's speak a similar language, though the mountain orcs tend to use ogre more than orcish.
  • Orcish

Goblin

The various goblin tribes communicate together, though few non-goblins have ever understood how.
  • Goblin

Draconic

Dragons and other reptilic species, including half dragons, communicate with the draconic language. This language is older than any of the languages that have come above it on this list. The draconic language has its home in a far off plane and so, there isn't any change to it as you travel from place to place.
  • Draconic

Giant

The giants have their own languages for it is rare that a frost giant would ever want or need to communicate with a fire giant.
  • Frost Giant
  • Fire Giant
  • Storm Giant
  • Cloud Giant
  • Stone Giant
  • Hill Giant
  • Mt Giant
  • Ogre

Outsider Languages

Outsiders come in many shapes, sizes and colors. Each tend to have their own language.
  • Abyssal: the language of demons
  • Infernal: the language of the baatezu, a subtype of devils, and of the Nine Hells
  • Celestial: the language of celestials
  • Sylvan: the language of the fey creatures which inhabits the planes.
  • Primordial: Elementals

    • Aquan (water creatures)
    • Auran (air creatures)
    • Ignan (fire creatures)
    • Terran (earth creatures)
  • Gith
  • Slaad

Creature Languages

Many monsters and creatures have languages of their own. It is difficult to learn these without spending time with them.
  • Aarakocra
  • Bullywug
  • Gnoll
  • Sahuagin
  • Worg
  • Troglodyte
  • Gripplie

Specific Languages

Last are languages that few are willing to teach and they each take a special effort to lean. These languages have prerequesites that must be met before you can learn them.
  • Druidic: All druids were taught Druidic, and they were forbidden to teach the language to anyone who was not a druid.
  • Thieves' Cant: a hidden language consisted more of slangs and innuendos more than an actual language. The main use of thieves' cant was to communicate rogue activities, such as banditry, burglary, finding marks, and discussing loot.
  • Dark Speech: the secret language of evil gods, a language of such evil that even demons and devils avoided speaking it.
  • Deep Speech: the language of aberrations, an alien form of communication originating in the Far Realm.
