Aerdaris

The Luminous City

Written by UnknownAeon

Demographics

As a large port city, Aerdaris is known to accept a large variety of different people. It is not uncommon to encounter people of many different races, backgrounds, and personalities roaming the fire lit streets of the luminous city. However, there is less diversity among the noble class, being constrained mostly to humans in the nobility of Aerdaris, and visiting nobles from far lands.

Government

Aerdaris is ruled by the Ardent Lord, a king of the noble bloodline from House Aerdan. The Aerdan bloodline created the initial settlement of Aerdaris, utilizing the warmth surrounding the Ardent Flame to help grow their community. The throne is passed down with each generation of the bloodline, keeping the traditions and sacred rituals of their ancestors.

Defences

A large wall spans the outside of the majority of the city. The western half of Aerdaris is fully enclosed by the wall, while the eastern half is only party enclosed, as such there is more crime present within the eastern half of Aerdaris. The Castle District also has an additional section of wall within the city to prevent entry from unauthorized citizens. Each entrance into the city is guarded at all hours of the day, and citizens are expected to provide reason to be allowed within the city. The guards reserve the right to prevent anyone from entering.   Towers span the walls at designated intervals with archers ready should an attack come from any side. Additionally, a number of these towers house siege weapons such as ballistae and trebuchets. A great bridge separates the two halves of the city as a choke point should one half be lost in battle. Enemy soldiers would have their progress bottlenecked as they attempt to cross the bridge.

History

Aerdaris was founded when refuges seeking new lands to settle landed upon a coastal clearing, after following the burning light in the sky now referred to as the Ardent Flame. The members of House Aerdan led many to the site and orchestrated the construction of a small settlement. Overtime, due to its location and access to the river, it blossomed into a center of trade, and a number of trade routes were created around it.

Geography

Aerdaris is located along the river Selindus which flows out into the Selindris Sea. The city is divided into two halves by the river, and a great arcane bridge spans the channel allowing travel between the two. Forests dot the landscape to the north and south of the city, placing it in a beautiful clearing amongst the river and shore.
