Raeas (Ray-us)

Raeas is a Paladin serving the Hanged King. He is responsible for the destruction of Linktree and Bellenau, and is the leader of the Vanishing Army.

History

The Great Betrayal

During the time of the Great Betrayal, Raeas served the Hanged King as a loyal knight and commander, fighting many battles against the Triumvirate of the Expanse. During the war, Raeas would fall in battle along with his men, and was entombed in the Crypt of the Vanishing Army. Ultimately, when the Hanged King was defeated, Raeas suffered a similar fate as the rest of his kind, and was cast into the void with his King to await the judgement of the gods. He remained buried in the crypt for several thousand years while the gods deliberated.

The New Moon

When the gods reached a decision regarding the Shadar-Kai, Raeas was returned to his mortal body when the New Moon was pulled from the void and appeared over Estrodia. Raeas and his men were trapped in the crypt, blocked by an ancient Ushanan seal until a warlock broke the seal and released them.

Hunting Team B

Awakening from the Crypt of the Vanishing Army, Raeas and his men began searching for the Godsoul Shards, the Tyr Stone they were guarding having been stolen by the Saffon twins. Having been told the Death Stone had been taken by Team B, and the Tyr Stone safely frozen within Ostrad, Raeas and his men began searching for the group of adventurers. Raeas' search for Pruni Half-foot led him to the monastery on Linktree, which he subsequently razed to the ground, killing most of the inhabitants.   Raeas would return to the Expanse and intercept the group as they returned from Dabreiya, in the town of Bellenau. Him and his men would destroy this town as well, and nearly killed Team B in the process. During their escape, Raeas successfully left the Hanged King's mark on Tungsten's arm. He would go on to search for the stones in Dabreiya, though would be discouraged by the overwhelming power the Dabreiyan Orcs held, and was unable to infilitrate the country.

The Ostrad Dome

Not long after, Raeas and the rest of the Vanishing Army would be alerted to Team B's presence in their Crypt when they rang the Trial Bell. Raeas took off for Ostrad immediately, correctly guessing that Team B would be going after the Tyr Stone. During the Crypt's Trials, Raeas' mark would exacerbate the already extreme effects placed on Tungsten, nearly claiming her arm permanently.   Raeas would intercept the group as they departed from Croton with the artifacts they needed to breach the Ostrad Dome. He appeared next to their campfire the night before they reached the dome, making an attempt to stop Tungsten and Pruni peacefully while somewhat explaining his motives and cause.   The next morning, he would again intercept them inside the Ostrad Dome, and fought them all the way up the twin's towers to where the Tyr Stone was projecting the time shield. Before he could claim the stone, Pruni deactivated the time shield and sealed the crystal, and in the ensuing chaos, Raeas was left behind as Team B escaped through Arvel Telavia's portal.

Personality

Raeas is a loyal Knight of the Hanged King, and is ruthless in the pursuit of his goals. He does not hesitate to kill people who obstruct his sworn duty, and will burn entire villages to the ground in order to find an important target. He also is not above taunting his targets, sadistically informing Pruni Half-foot that he had burned her island to the ground looking for her. He is consumed by hatred for those he believes wronged his people, and will do whatever it takes to retake what is rightfully his.   However, Raeas is not singular in his savagery. Prior to fighting them in Ostrad, he attempted to dissuade Team B from pursuing the stone peacefully, choosing to speak to them at their camp instead of attacking them. While he holds no remorse for killing, he will only kill when he deems it necessary, and takes no pleasure in inflicting carnage upon innocent people.   He has sympathy for the people of the current age, and recognizes that they are not responsible for the sins of their ancestors. Nevertheless, he will hold them to the debt their ancestors acrued, and is willing to do whatever it takes to make good use of the second chance granted to his people.
