Falstarr's Advent

Falstarr's Advent is a lake that is the source of all magic in the world. It was formed over 1000 years ago when a meteor fell from the sky—crashing into a settlement built near the edge of a forest. Every living creature for several miles was immediately vaporised by the heat and force of the impact, fossilizing their souls as iridescent crystals lining the crater. The meteor was truly Falstarr God of the Arcane, taking a physical form and entering the world at large. The crater was filled with clear water from an underground reservoir, covering the crystals that lined the edge of the lake. The lake is so clear that one can see straight to the bottom and appears to be deceptively shallow. At night the crystals glitter and glow making them look just like stars plucked from the sky and trapped under water.
Once a year, on the anniversary of the impact, all citizens of Forstal- a now abandoned town that was built near the lake, boarded their windows at sunset, locking their homes up tightly, and did not leave the safety of their dwellings until sunrise the next morning. Any who dared set foot outside on this night always vanished. As this is the night that the souls locked within the crystals beneath the water leave their crystal homes and walk the earth again. Most don't realize they're dead and are therefore harmless, simply going about their business as they did on the day they died. But for the select few that realize the world is not how they left it, they can grow extremely hostile and will drag any living thing foolish enough to be outside on this night into the crystals with them. Only to leave them again on this date next year.
